“Sidney!” I screeched over the crowd when I spotted his mop of blonde hair, “Sidney Phillips, get your scrawny ass over here!”
As soon as he spotted me, he came pushing through the crowd to get to me. I let out an excited squeal when he got close enough for me to throw my arms around his neck. He immediately hoisted me up off the ground in a bone-crushing hug.
“ God, you smell!” I winced as he pulled me in closer, “More than usual.”
“Hi big brother, I missed you, glad you’re okay.” He mocked in a high pitch voice as he jostled me about.
“Just wanted to make sure you knew that nothin’ around here changed without you, that’s all.” I grinned as he set me back on the ground. I smoothed my hands over his jacket before patting him on the chest,
“All in one piece?”
He nodded. Though I could see a bruise poking out from behind the few strands of hair that flopped in front of his face. My lips pursed as I brushed the hair away, fingertips ghosting over the bruise. He let out a hiss,
“What happened there?”
“I uh…” He paused, trying to disguise the grin that was tugging at the corners of his lips, “Had too much to drink on the train, fell and bashed my head.”
“Sidney.” I scolded, shaking my head at him, “Survive the war just to crack your head open the day you get home?”
He shrugged.
“How’s Eugene?” I asked, my gaze shifting to my feet.
Eugene, Sid, and I had all grown up together, getting into all kinds of trouble, lying about being at each other’s houses while we played in the woods together, coming home covered in mud and bruises.
“He just left and you’re already worried ‘bout that boy?”
“It’s Eugene. Of course I’m worried ‘bout him.”
Sid rolled his eyes at me,
“He’s a clutz, Sid. He’s gonna… I don’t know… Fall on his own grenade or something.”
Sidney threw back his head and laughed,
“Totally not worried ‘bout him ‘cause you’ve been chasin’ after him since you were 12.”
I scoffed, elbowing him in the stomach. He chuckled, looping his arm through mine and leading me out of the crowd.

May I request Joe being the best and softest dad on his daughter’s birthday?
WE STAN DAD!JOE
“Daddy!” Ruth yelled as Joe came through the door.
He’d been away filming, but he never missed her birthday or Christmas. That was a promise he’d made you just after Ruth was born. No matter what, he’d be home for those days. He would have been home the previous day, but his flight was cancelled. He felt horrible, and called you and your daughter from the airport.
He scooped her up in his arms and spun her around, kissing her cheeks while she giggled. “How’s my baby girl?!”
“Daddy, I’m not a baby anymore,” she insisted, still smiling. “I’m six today!”
“You’ll always be my baby,” he replied, kissing her once more on the head for good measure.
“Did you bring me any presents?” she asked eagerly.
“Of course I did,” he assured her. “They’re in my suitcase.”
She squirmed in his arms, desperate for her gifts. He set her down and let her have at them while he came to say hello to you. He kissed you deeply, and you gasped a little.
“Goodness,” you sighed.
“I missed you,” he said.
“I missed you too, honey,” you said. “Are you able to help me with the rest of these balloons? I know you must be tired from the flight, but -”
He cut you off with another sweet peck. “I’m not too tired. The one that was cancelled was out of Atlanta, so it wasn’t long.”
You smiled as Ruth came tearing into the kitchen, carrying all her new toys from Joe.
“Daddy, these are amazing!” she cried. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
She dropped everything and hugged him around his legs. He stroked her auburn hair gently.
“Anything for you, Ruthie,” he said. “Happy birthday.”
“Thank you!” she cried again.
“Your party is gonna start soon, sweetie,” you said. “Wanna go change into your dress?”
She nodded and you disappeared up the stairs with her. You took Joe’s suitcase up as well while he continued with the decorations. When you came back down, Ruth gave a twirl as Joe looked up.
“You’re very pretty, princess,” he said, scooping her up again.
Soon, guests were arriving. You invited her kindergarten classmates and their parents as well as your own family and friends. Rami and Lucy were in town so they came too. It was a Disney princess themed party, so naturally there was a lot of pink, a castle bounce house, and all the kids were dressed as Disney characters. Ruth originally said she was going to be Ariel because of the red hair, but she changed her mind and went with Rapunzel.
Joe was with her all day. She held his hand and dragged him around wherever she went. Not that he minded, of course. He had missed her and she had missed him, so they had to be together. The only time he wasn’t was when she was in the bounce house with her friends. He was out there to take plenty of pictures, though.
When the time came for her to blow out the candles on the cake, she had Joe help her. You started cutting the pieces and handing them out, but you heard her lean over to talk to Joe.
“Daddy,” she whispered. “Since you helped blow out the candles, you can hear my wish. Wanna know what it was?”
“If you wanna tell me, Ruthie,” he returned.
“I wished that you would never have to go away again,” she said quietly. “I know you have to, so it can’t come true. But maybe with enough wishes…” she trailed off.
“Aw, baby,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. He kissed her on the forehead. “I love you so much.”
You turned away to wipe the tear that sprang to your eye.
“You wanna know something?” he asked, and she nodded. “On my birthday, I wish for the same thing.”
“Really?” she wondered.
“Mmhmm,” he said with a nod. “So you let me take care of that wish. You wish for something for you.”
“Okay,” she said brightly. “I’ll wish for more toys every time you come home!”
He chuckled. “There’s my girl.”
