Okay so funny idea-

Rivalry is the only way to court a Hatake.

Being rivals with a Hatake means you are courting them.

Kakashi : *waiting for Gai, for almost over 20 years (!), to finally give him any fucking gifts that he could accept, signifying they would now be mates*

Gai : ETERNAL RIVAL !!! :D

Kakashi : *silently crying in his head*

Kakashi's ninken : *sigh in pain*

Gai : *has absolutely no idea about Hatake courting* ? :D

In the pure world :

Sakumo : *wincing for his son* aouch... My poor little pup...

Dai : *annoyed at his son obliviousness* SAGE DAMNIT SON-

Also... The Senju brothers being half Hatake.

Izuna : Aha ! We meet again rival !

Tobirama : Pardon !? since when ?! *Blushing shocked*

Izuna : Eh ??? *Confused*

Hashirama : !!! You didn't tell me Tobi ! :0

Madara : Izuna you moron ! They're half Hatake !!!

Izuna : !!! OH UM- NEVERMIND ! *blushing embarrassed*

Hashirama : Aw :'( *disappointed*

Tobirama : ... *Is secretly disappointed too*

Touka : *is laughing like a hyena*

Hikaku : *is sighing in exhaustion*

The rest of the Senjus and Uchihas fighting : *Stop fighting to observe bemused at the interaction*

During the summer where Hashirama and Madara meet... :

Madara : So are we rivals now ?

Hashirama : Ah- um... Maybe...? If you wanna, I wouldn't mind... *Is fidgeting, shy and blushing*

Madara : *looks at him confused* ???

Hashirama : I'm half Hatake...

Madara : OH- hhhhhhh... No. Sorry... *Looks away blushing, actually sad he has to say no*

Hashirama : Oh... ;'( *Sad little puppy*

Kabuto : ... I've lived with Orochimaru for years since my childhood. I can live easily with that amount of flamboyance.

Kabuto: I have an army. Tsunade: We have a Kakashi and Gai.

I know this was an imagine I worked on a hot minute ago but never finished: but a Kakagai Band AU, in which Lee is a huge fan of Kakashi who is the lead singer in an alternative rock band, and it doesn’t really register with Gai who Kakashi is until his coworkers at the school (he is a teacher) give him tickets to go. It’s only when he hears Kakashi’s voice that he recognizes Kakashi as the kid he knew way back when before the other moved after his father passed away. They were extremely close, and Gai had been heartbroken when he never heard from Kakashi again (Kakashi moved away when he was 15).

Back when they were young, Gai was the only person allowed to here Kakashi sing, and now he’s singing for a whole group of people. Lee is going wild with excitement beside him, gushing about how cool the band is and how the leader is soooo mysterious. Gai can agree with that, Kakashi used to be mysterious to him to, at first, until Gai pushed to know him better. For a few years, Gai thought he knew Kakashi better than everyone else, until the other up and left without even promising to call.

It hurts a little seeing Kakashi again after like, 12 years. They’re totally different now. Kakashi has a moderately successful band, Gai has three adopted kids whom he loves with all his heart. But the thing that hasn’t changed is, when Gai sees Kakashi up on that stage, his heart thunders in his chest the way it used to whenever Kakashi sung to him. His cheeks flush, and he gets all nervous where he stands. Gai thinks it’s ludicrous for a grown man to feel this giddy about someone he fell out of touch with 12 years ago, but Gai remembers how close they were and how, for awhile, Gai thought he and Kakashi would spend the rest of their lives together. (Gai didn’t realize until he was older and after Kakashi left what that actually *meant* to him).

As both a blessing and a curse, Gai has backstage passes to meet the band. It was mostly a surprise for Lee, but Gai is both dreading and dreadfully excited for it. Granted, there’s always a chance Kakashi won’t recognize him, just like Gai almost hadn’t, but Gai won’t think about the disappointment that would cause. Instead he tries to tame an over eager Lee as they’re escorted back stage after the concert. Gai determines whether he should keep his distance and let this moment be all about Lee. He goes with stepping back. After all, Lee is more important than any awkward reuniting him and Kakashi could do, but that doesn’t work out well for Gai.

As soon as Lee meets the band, he’s all jumping enthusiasm and so much like Gai it’s insane how they’re not blood related. From where he stands, Gai can see Kakashi go still upon seeing Lee, like he is suddenly thrown back in time, 12 years ago, when his childhood friend looked and acted the same way. Lee doesn’t notice the tension in his favorite lead singer, because he’s rapidly shaking the other’s hand and then loudly announcing that he came here with his ‘dad’ and, “Dad, what are you doing back there come *here*.”

The moment Kakashi and Gai’s eyes meet, Gai knows Kakashi remembers him. Kakashi’s grey eyes widen from where he stands, his shoulders tense, his fingers fidget near his thighs. Everything about the silver haired man says he wants to bolt, but he doesn’t because Lee is still holding onto him. Gai thinks he feels the same way as Kakashi, but resolves to wear the biggest grin he can as he says, “It’s been awhile, Kakashi. Lee is a big fan of yours.”

Kakashi is still and doesn’t say a word. His other band mates look confused (Asuma, Obito, and Kurenai—Rin is a fellow teacher at Konoha Academy) at the apparent familiarity between the two men. Lee sees this as well and asks, “You know him, dad?”

“Y-Yeah,” Gai stammers awkwardly. “We grew up together.” Suddenly, Kakashi’s band members must realize something, because they laugh nervously and nudge Kakashi in the back.

“Say something, dude?” Obito hisses as he none too subtly punches Kakashi’s shoulders. “You look like an idiot.”

Kakashi’s first and only response is, “Y-You have a son?”

Gai smiles. Talking about his kids is easy and familiar, “Two actually, and a little girl. This one is Lee, and my other two are Neji and TenTen. They’re at home with the babysitter though.”

“O-Oh...why wouldn’t they be at home with your wife?” Kakashi shyly asks, but it’s not subtle in the slightest, at least not to his band mates who whistle lowly in amusement. However, Kakashi’s intention behind the question does go over Gai’s head.

Gai’s expression puzzles, “I don’t have a wife...just my kids?” He doesn’t think to explain that he’s a single father, and that he adopted his adorable brats after taking a year off to travel after graduating college. To Gai, his kids are his kids, whether they’re adopted or not means little to him.

Kakashi is still a nervous wreck, but there is a breathless sigh of relief at the news Gai isn’t married. Kakashi falls silent again, seemingly content to take in all that Gai has grown to be since they were teenagers. It’s only after Kakashi’s manager interrupts with a cough saying they have other people to greet that Kakashi startles out of his silence.

“So soon?” He asks his manager, whom nods and taps his watch as if to say ‘get a move on’.

Gai, seeing this, smiles easily. It was nice seeing Kakashi again, and even nicer knowing the other still recognized him. Gai is grown now, so the hurt and bitterness he once felt towards Kakashi is nothing but a memory. Instead, he’s thrilled to see that Kakashi is living a successful life.

“We should head home anyway, Lee.” Lee looks disappointed at the fact, but before he can pout, Kakashi hurriedly rummages in his pockets to give Lee one of his guitar picks. Lee is thrilled and says as much, even after they say their farewells. It’s all Lee can talk about when they wake up the next morning. Gai is almost getting a little less enthusiastic at Lee’s tenth telling of the story of how he was given the guitar pick, so the knock that sounds on his door is a huge relief.

Until he swings it open to see Kakashi standing on the other side, shoulders hunched, hands dug deep in his pockets, and seemingly having an internal crisis. Gai doesn’t even get a chance to say anything before Kakashi blurts, “I lost my phone! Back then, when I left...I lost my phone at the train station.”

Gai is confused on what Kakashi could possibly mean, until Kakashi clarifies, “I always wanted to keep in touch Gai, but I lost my phone and your phone number. And it’s not like we had social media back then so I just...it wasn’t in purpose. It was never on purpose.”

And Gai had told himself that he hadn’t felt bitter at Kakashi anymore, but the huge weight he feels lift from his shoulders at Kakashi’s hasty explanation might say otherwise. This time, when he smiles, it’s a true smile, one reminiscent of their childhood years together.

It’s only after Gai invites Kakashi in for a morning cup of coffee that he even pauses to think, “Wait, how do you know where I live?”

Kakashi’s only response is to enigmatically sip on his coffee as he mindlessly listens to Lee try to horribly mimic his favorite song on the guitar. Neji glares in scrutinizing distrust from across the table while TenTen swoons over the mysterious new guy at their dinner table, “And *dad* can’t you see the way he was *looking* at you?”

Spoiler Alert: Tenten is the first to realize Kakashi is smitten with Gai. Her dad is oblivious. Neji takes his time feeling Kakashi out before determining he’s an acceptable person to have in their life. Lee just wants to learn how to play the guitar. Eventually, Gai and Kakashi get married after Gai comes to his senses and realizes Kakashi is literally the love of his life. The end.

Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai

Kakagai Week Day 8: Gai’s Birthday

Edited by: @mireleth

Two days of non-stop preparation, help from every single member of Team Seven and Team Gai, and more work than he has ever put into anything else in his life, and here he is.

Standing in front of Gai, sweating buckets after asking him for a challenge for the first time in months.

“A challenge?” Gai looks unsure about the request, which only makes Kakashi worry more. “I would never turn down a challenge with you, Rival. Though, I must admit it is a bit odd. You are rarely ever the one to initiate a challenge.”

He had known that Gai might have concerns about the fact that he was actually asking for a challenge for once, but it was a risk that he had to take. His plans wouldn’t work otherwise.
