“You know you can’t be clutching onto me while on the board, correct?” As she scanned your words for any real annoyance or negativity, you tried to take a small step back. What does this action get out of her? Well, it gets you being grabbed like a lifeline.
It’s almost endearing, really. The way she insisted that you teach her the ways around the strange object, the skateboard. In all her years of living in city of Fontaine, known for its technology and advancements, she’d never seen something quite like this.
With her head buried in your shoulder, she brought her head back quickly, “uhm— of course I’m well aware of that! I simply wanted to test you.” You both knew she was lying, trying to save her embarrassment.
As you spent the whole day, slowly trying to get her more comfortable with being on her own, it came to a halt when she got upset. “This isn’t right! I’m supposed to be able to handle such a simple task! As the hydro archon, I—,” she cut herself off.
The dusk sunset highlighted her features, while accentuating the sadness in her eyes and body. Her voice was small in her next words.
“I just wanted to…give us something to bond over. Something more than my ramblings, or my incessant attempts at seeming bigger than I am.”
It hurt to see her crack in her facade due to her own distaste for her actions. “We can try again, Furina. I promise, we can try as many times as you’d like.”
She lifted her head to look at you, “really?” A few tears fell onto her cheeks, and you lifted your hand to wipe them.
“Of course, you’re never a waste of time.”

You’d been made aware of her fear of the rain, well, the anxiety at least. When a clap of thunder would reign down, you were no fool when it came to feeling her grip tighten around your hand or waist.
Or perhaps you were.
While you were unconscious still, the false archon had been awoken by a trembling strike of lightning. It didn’t sound too close, but it certainly shook her. Helplessly turning to you, she was conflicted. You were sleeping through it fine.
The only thing she was capable of doing in that moment was try to shift her way closer without waking you. It didn’t matter to her if you would mind or not, she couldn’t let you see her like this. What idiot is afraid of storms anyway?
So she was focused on the rain that was attempting to make a forced entry into her mind. She didn’t even sense or feel your arms reach around her. Barely aware of her fright in its entirety, you pulled her closer into your own body.
Letting go for only a moment to grab your headphones off the bedside table, she panicked. “Wait, please!”
It was a near shriek. One she would surely be embarrassed by if she wasn’t so terrified.
“I’m here, okay? I’m not going anywhere, Furina.” You placed the headphones in front of her shivering body. She was shaking, but rigid as well. “I am never going to leave your side in your time of need. I promise you that.”
