He was surprised.

A few seconds ago he was sitting here on foot in the armchair at the foot of the cabin enjoying the peace he rarely had in his own home, peace that did not last long when he saw Mabel sit with a bounce on the armchair. Smiling at him in a funny way he could not understand.

¿Perhaps did he have something weird for her to smile at her like that?

And then came Gretchen.

“Gretchen,” he thought as the air ran out.

Gretchen came with a radiant smile like the summer sun, she looked so innocent at the time and never suspected she could have been so audacious, but she was.

He remembered how to breathe when Gretchen pulled his lips from hers him and gave him a timid smile contradicting his previous act.

“Hello, Dib,” she said happily, before narrowing it him in a fort embrace.

He felt her cheeks redden.
