For the Gentle Wind Doth Move [excerpt]

Gooood Morning! Sorry I haven't been writing on here these past few days, I've been working on the aforementioned 'Period Piece V x reader fanfic'. I am on the waiting list for an AO3 account where I will hopefully post it. Under the cut is a short excerpt of chapter one.

Enjoy.

“There is a man in your garden.” the groundskeeper, Warren, said breathlessly from behind his white moustache. Astonishment painted his old features.

“A man?” you repeated worriedly. He simply nodded and grunted once in confirmation. You looked back at Della who had stopped her efforts to make breakfast, the kettle not even half-filled.

“I believe he’s wounded.” Warren continued quietly, taking off his hat. Before the sentence even left his lips, you stood erect, swiftly walking past him to get to the garden and see this “man”. Della followed you, Warren behind her. You broke out in a light jog after exiting the house. Della shouted something, a warning maybe, but you were set on seeing who it was; the mystery man that had frightened Warren and possibly broken into your garden.

Then you saw him.

You were no more than ten feet away from him when Della’s arm shot out in front of you to stop you.

“What if he’s dangerous?” she hissed in warning. There was no malice aimed in her words, only worry. Her brow was knitted and her eyes were on the man.

From what you could see he was unconscious. The man’s body was covered in a large sheet of some kind, shrouding everything between his shins and neck. His form was slumped between the stone wall and your rhododendron bushes. The red flowers hung around his face and body, framing him in almost a profound and artistic way. If he did not move you could have been convinced he was a painting. He was folded in on himself almost protectively. His head lolled on his shoulder, inky black hair that came to about his jaw was plastered to his face and prevented you from seeing his eyes. You could make out a prominent nose and full lips, his cheeks were sunken just so and he was absolutely soaked to the bone.

“How long has he been out here?” you asked Warren.

“I don’t know. Found him this morning. Then I told you.” he put simply.

Warren inched closer to the man’s unconscious form.

“He appears to be nude.”

“Nude?”

“Under the cloth.”

A light rosy blush dusted your cheeks. It could have been the cold morning air, yes it must be.

You pondered the situation for a moment. What could have possibly happened for him to arrive here unconscious and nude? The man intrigued you immensely and you didn’t even know his name. Surely people would talk if you let him in your house, surely there would be drama, but you couldn’t just turn away an injured man on your property. Hopefully no one else saw him, your nearest neighbor was no more than two miles away.

“Bring him inside.”
