Phantom didn’t see the danger.
Captivated by the newborn human baby he had been handed, he played with the tiny hand wrapped tightly around his index finger. The mother explained the story of her son’s birth as Phantom smiled down at him. Last week, Phantom had caught the wall that would have landed on her and her unborn child mere hours before she went into labor. Phantom had saved her and given the baby human he held in his arms a chance to breathe for the first time, and she wanted him to know. She had called him down from the skies to tell him. She called him a hero, and for once, as he held that small life she trusted him—a ghost—to hold, he actually felt like one.
The other humans sitting outside the coffee shop’s veranda listened as well. Some hid their smiles behind their cups, but Phantom didn’t need to see their expressions to know how they felt. An atmosphere of gratitude, fondness, happiness surrounded him, emanating from the humans as if they were welcoming him to stay. He tried to fight them back, but tears gathered in his eyes. The mother, the woman he had saved purely out of instinct, touched his arm.
It was that feeling of safety and acceptance that lulled him into dropping his guard. He never would have done such a thing in the Ghost Zone.

A voice shouted, “Get down!”
Phantom spun to see what was happening. It only took a glance to recognize Danny Fenton, the youngest child of the local ghost hunters, the one who had opened the portal to the Ghost Zone. It took longer to understand what the bright green flash behind Fenton meant.
Danger. An attack.
Phantom widened his eyes. Caught his breath.
And then Danny’s body collided into his. Arms looped around his neck and heat slid into his core. Danny’s momentum pitched Phantom backward. They fell together as the humans around them screamed. The sound became muffled and then silent. Phantom’s vision dimmed as if he was passing out, falling unconscious.

“Do you see Jupiter?” Danny’s voice asked, excitement lifting it higher. “The clouds? The shadows?”
Phantom managed only a weak sound in confirmation. His left eye was closed, but his right eye saw into deep space and witnessed the fifth planet, the one humans had nicknamed The Red Giant through Danny’s telescope. There were layers of clouds swirling slowly around Jupiter’s atmosphere, greater than any ectoplasmic cloud. He had never seen anything like it. The Ghost Zone had many wonders, but nothing like this.
