We finally reached fandom unity because PB couldn’t deliver on the nasty
It’s not a fully fleshed out thought but I’ve grasped it now and so here’s what I’ve got dangling…
It’s so interesting to me that of the many issues and annoyances I have with Rory’s character her decisions around Yale are so tied to men.
Though the show we have a general sense that Rory (and by extension Loralai who raised her) have a distain or disappointment when women make choices due to men. Mainly when these choices are not mainly or solely things that a woman wants, and take another persons (usually a man’s) wants into account we see Rory scoff or roll her eyes or frown intensely and question it. When someone else makes a decision due to a man they want to like them or respect them, Rory seems to like and respect them less (at least in that moment).
But when a man, one who’s good opinion and respect SHE wants, says something hard and hurtful Rory abandons everything she (and by extension he mother) have worked for since she was a child. At the very least she gives up the main goal that’s dominated the last 3 years of her life. A man doesn’t think she’s good enough, so she gives up trying.
And though everyone tries to understand and support her, to change her mind and make her want to go back to Yale and to reignite her goals for her future, it is once again a man (who Rory wants to respect her and have a good opinion of her) who says a hard and hurtful thing which makes her go back to Yale.
And in the middle of all of that it’s another man (her grandfather) who has so much influence on her ‘choices’. Firstly in his support of her leaving, and in his 180 in the face of the reality of her life Rory’s grandfathers support plays a huge role in her confidence in her decisions and path.
I just find it fascinating that the writers chose to remove so much of Rory’s agency in these ‘choices’. They don’t write that Rory struggles at college, having reached the pinnacle she was working for and realising it isn’t as fulfilling as she had hoped; that she struggles (like she first did at Chiltern) now she is among other gifted people and she is once again less exceptional; that the courses she takes feel uninteresting and she languishes without drive or a purpose.
No they choose to write her story as a man says something mean and so she runs away.
And again, they don’t write her return to Yale as Rory being revitalised by her time away and once again motivated to aim higher; they don’t have her realise that she does thrive surrounded by other intellectuals and though it’s tough she CAN rise to the challenge like she did before; they don’t have her realise her dream career or degree is actually different than she thought so she goes back and changes major or her classes.
No once again, the writers have a man say something mean and so she runs away. Only this time she runs away back to where she was before.
So in the face of disappointment or dislike, at least from men she wants to like her, the only ‘choice’ Rory is allowed to make is to run.

I had a dream that I was on Saturn and there were two lists presented in front of me of all the music I have ever listened to in my life on the left was a list of all the alive artists & on the right all the artists that were no longer with us and I had to choose which group of artists I would want to hear for the rest of my life.
sometimes i think about late half blood prince - deathly hallows snape and want to cry.. it is the climax of his arc for me, not in the pov of the reader (that would be prince's tale) but for his own self as a character.. when he chose to stay, he chose to kill dumbledore and to continue being a spy after he knew harry was fated to die. that "infamous" scene of him crying with lily's photo is so touching for me when you don't misinterpret it and put it in context.. he was letting her go in that scene. he was crying because he had just killed the closest person he had left, but also because he made the active choice of failing lily, of continuing dumbledore's plans and leading harry to his death for the greater good instead of protecting him like he promised all those years ago. the ultimate instant in where he decides to give up the individual (his own redemption, lily, his own grievances and need for power) to save the wizarding world, where he realizes that this is bigger than him and lily and everyone. that to do that, he'd have to let her down. it hurts me so bad

Landry Olsen Finding Out About Ethan and f!MC (Charlie) - Headcanon
for a long time, I’ve been meaning to make a fic about Landry finding out about Ethan and MC, and after reading @utterlyinevitable‘s amazing HC, I was encouraged and inspired to finally write my HC out. Her characterization was incredible - truly wanted to punch Landry.
Also, for me, MC is Charlie. I kept writing Charlie by accident, so MC is just Charlie now.
It had been 10 years since Landry Olsen moved to Boston – and 7 years since he left.
Landry Olsen finished his residency at Mass Kenmore successfully but quietly. He did well but never distinguished himself. He was, at best, an upper middle candidate – good but never as good as the greats who walked the hall beside him.
Never as good as Charlie.
Charlie ended her residency at the helm of Edenbrook with a permanent position on the bolstered diagnostics team. Within a month of her completed residency, she had dozens of research offers, job opportunities, and even a handful of speaking invitations. She was the face of medicine.
It wasn’t fair, of course.
She was just lucky. She caught all the right breaks.
She didn’t work for it like Landry did.

Ethan thought he saw Charlie that morning.
It was just a glimpse – a flash of blonde hair and a hint of laughter wandering through the hospital halls. It couldn’t be her, of course. She hadn’t stepped foot in Boston in five years.
Or maybe she had.
Maybe she walked these hallowed streets every single day, a lingering ghost forever out of sight.
Maybe this city welcomed its open arms in secret. Maybe the specter of their relationship left her untouched. Maybe she could travel all the paths she’d traveled with him without even an inkling of hurt.
Perhaps she visited and never even had the urge to find him, not that Ethan could say the same. But Charlie, his darling Rookie, had always been stronger than him.
She was the one who dared to demand more of him. She was courageous enough to wage war, one they both lost. Then, when Ethan held on to the frayed and damaged hope of a spectacular reunion, she was strong enough to leave. She left Boston, Edenbrook, and even Ethan. She made a new life for herself, and when Ethan couldn’t fathom the thought of another, she was brave enough to fall in love again.

His reward was aching regret and a lifetime of “what ifs?” He faltered nearly every day in that first year. He bought at least a dozen flights to California, but he never boarded a plane. Every time he looked at her wedding picture – the one he printed to remind himself of what he would ruin if he found her.

She had been for about four years.
Ethan heard that they had a child, too.
He had no real claim to her anymore, but he could never feel any less “hers.” Despite a string of half-hearted attempts, he could never belong to anyone else.
