Different Types of Ruts
Different types of Heats
Natural ruts
Definition: Natural ruts are organic ruts that are not triggered by an omega’s heat. An alpha’s body does not need to prepare for reproduction or extreme biological change, so natural ruts are not as frequent as heats. Ruts have a similar purpose to sexual heats, to find a mate and breed. Natural ruts last 1-4 days.
When: Natural ruts occur 2-3 times a year in alphas of all ages. Ruts tend to stop/slow down around the age of 55.
How to handle: Easier to go through with a mate/partner, however, if there is no partner, fellow pack members and loved ones can calm the alpha down and turn the rut mellow and non-sexual. Sex, cuddles, keep fed and hydrated.
Symptoms: Possessive behavior of mate and pack members, aroused state, restless, produces protective and, usually, seductive scent.
Induced ruts
Definition: Induced ruts can occur for two reasons. 1. An alpha’s mate/partner goes into heat. 2. They take a supplement that will send them into rut if they want to have pups. It is important to note that ruts cannot be caused by unfamiliar omegas. When packs were more primitive and had to fight for territory, rival packs would send their omegas in heat to lure enemy alphas in and kill them, leaving the alphas’ pack vulnerable. Induced heats last the duration of the heat which induced it or, if medically induced, about 1-3 days.
When: Occurs when a significant other goes into heat or medically activated. Common in alphas ages 18-50. Induced ruts can occur as often as once every two months.
How to handle: Let them be with their partner. Sex is the best solution.
Symptoms: Possessive behavior of mate, aroused state, restless, produces protective and seductive scent, fever.

Warm Heats
Definition: Warm heats occur for many reasons. In some warm heats, the body is preparing for reproduction and is not quite ready. Alternatively warm heats occur to rest and recuperate the body after reproduction. Warm heats can only occur if an omega is in a safe situation. Warm heats typically last 2-4 days.
When: Warm heats frequently occur in omegas ages 14-16/17, pregnant omegas, the first couple heats after having a child, and in omegas age 40 and older.
How to handle: Lots of cuddles and time with loved ones, keep them hydrated and fed.
Symptoms: Hazy, cuddly, fever, drowsy, thirsty, produces a sweet, not seductive, scent, nesting
Sexual heats
Definition: Sexual heats occur when the body is ready for reproduction. Typically last 2-6 days.
When: Sexual heats are more reuccurent in omegas ages 17/18-40.
How to handle: Sex and knots. Keep them hydrated, but do not force them to eat. Most omegas will not eat willingly during sexual heats.
Symptoms: Hazy, fever, restless, produces slick, produces a seductive scent, lack of appetite, nesting
Dry heats
Definition: The body is not ready to reproduce or prepare for reproduction. Occurs when the omega is in a bad physical condition, mental state, or environment. Usually painful. Alters the body and shuts down all biological functions involved in reproduction. Not healthy. Dry heats can last anywhere from 2-7 days.
When: Omegas in unsafe environments. Examples: physical, mental, or emotional abuse, no pack bonds or mate, unfamiliar location, lots of stress or anxiety.
How to handle: Take the omega to a nest or den. Do not leave them alone. Keep them hydrated, fed, and maintain physical contact. If the dry heat worsens, take the omega to the nearest hospital.
Symptoms: Hazy, cramps, separation anxiety, headache, fearfulness, high emotions or extremely emotionless, distressed scent
A/B/O For Dummies - Fanfic Trope Explained
A/B/O Dynamics, or Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, are a fanfic trope that centers around the concept of human knotting and mating, also called soulbonding, and the relationships between Alphas, Betas and Omegas. In this trope, readers will see a wide variety of universes and different world-building, but really, there are just a few important things that one needs to know before they will be ready to jump into the world of A/B/O and find out for themselves!
Presentation – At birth, all humans present a primary gender- male or female. From the ages of 13-18, depending on the particular fic, females and males present as their secondary gender- Alpha, Beta or Omega. Presentation is typically accompanied by a heat or rut, and after secondary presentation humans will now give off a certain scent depending on whether they are Alpha, Beta or Omega.
Alpha – The dominant presentation, Alpha presentations are typically preferred in A/B/O society. Alphas usually hold high paying jobs or occupy powerful government positions. Upon puberty/presentation, Alphas develop knots on their genitalia. In most fics, Alphas are male. However, in fics where there are female Alphas, they look like regular women with a smaller, external knot and internal testes. Of course, this is all dependent upon the fic author.

Personal Note: In my fic, males and females can both present as Alphas equally and successfully get their Omega mates pregnant.
Beta – Betas are the neutral presentation. In most fics, their senses of smell of less than that of Alphas and Omegas, and they typically do not give off strong pheromones like Alphas or Omegas do. Generally speaking, they are just regular humans. Depending on the fic, female Betas may be able to get pregnant by their Alpha/Beta mates. Male Betas cannot get pregnant. In some A/B/O Universes, Betas do not exist.
Personal Note: In my fics, only female Betas can get pregnant, and can be impregnated by either an Alpha or a Beta. Beta males can also impregnate Omegas. However, I have not yet written a story where a Beta character actively impregnates his mate.
Omega – The submissive presentation, and in fics often described as the most shameful. Omegas produce slick when they are in heat and when they are aroused. Omegas have slick-glands, or auto-lubricant glands, that when stimulated produce a moist substance that resembles real life lube and makes penetration easier. Omegas can also become pregnant, and depending on the fic, typically carry more than one child per pregnancy. Omegas are typically smaller than Alphas and Betas. Female Omegas have the same appearance as a regular human woman, while male Omegas typically have a smaller penis and balls. In some fics, male Omegas are castrated upon presentation (more on A/B/O castration here).
Personal Note: In my fic, Omegas are just as common as Alphas and Betas. Omegas are typically treated with stereotypical expectations and occupy jobs as caretakers, such as teaching and nursing.
Mpreg – Depending on the fic author, some stories do not include mpreg. In stories that do include mpreg, male Omegas birth in one of three ways:
1. Anal birth
2. A vaginal opening that manifests days/weeks before the birth and then closes up again after the baby has been born
3. C-Section
In some tropes, male Omegas are extremely rare and therefore male pregnancies are considered more difficult. However, in most fics Omegas are naturally inclined to birthing children and there is no problem at all.
Personal Note: In my fic, male Omegas give birth through their anal opening, and that is where they are knotted as well. Male pregnancies are no more complicated than any other type of pregnancy, and Omegas are actually easier birthers than Betas.
Heat/Rut – Fertile Omegas and Alphas experience heats and ruts from the age of presentation until they reach an age where they can no longer have children. Omegas suffer from heats while Alphas typically suffer from ruts. Like female menstruation, Omega heats can last from 3-7 days, while Alpha Ruts are usually shorter, all depending on the universe that the fic author has built. Alphas and Omegas can usually get themselves through their heats through masturbation and by using toys, though in some universes Omega Heats can become fatal if the Omega does not mate with an Alpha. Fics with this trope are usually labeled ‘fuck or die’, or something similar to that effect. Heats and Ruts occur regularly for healthy Omegas and Alphas, and depending on the fic author can occur at regular intervals between 1 months or a year. The most common ‘heat schedules’ you will see in fanfic are monthly, tri-monthly and yearly. Some fics do not feature Alpha ruts.

Knotting – Knotting in A/B/O, conceptually, is the same way that it is for dogs and wolves. During penetrative sex, an Alpha’s knot inflates the closer they get to orgasm. The knot locks them inside of their sex partner while they cum, theoretically to increase the chance of pregnancy. In fanfic, knots typically last anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours. Orgasm can be achieved without knotting one’s partner, and knots do not typically form when Alphas are masturbating. When a knot is not inflated, it remains as a ring of soft tissue around the base of an Alpha’s penis.

Scent marking is practiced by mated Alphas, Betas and Omegas to reassure themselves in times of distress and/or to mark their ‘territory’. Omegas and Alphas typically scent each other or scent mark each other by wearing one another’s clothes, clinging to each other, or sniffing one another’s scent glands.
Personal Note: In my fic, only Alphas leave mating bites on their partner’s skin, and typically bite their necks. I have not written a fic yet where Alphas bite a different part of their mate’s body.
Suppressants – Like human birth control, suppressants prevent pregnancy. Suppressants, especially Omega suppressants, come with bad side effects like intense nausea and in some instances infertility. Suppressants for Alphas and Omegas are meant to stop heats/ruts, though in some fics suppressants do not stop Omega heats, just make them more bearable. Prolonged use of suppressants can have horrible consequences for both Alphas and Omegas.
Here are some headcanons about A/B/O Suppressants based on collected theories/fics.
Personal Note: In my fic, Omegas and Alphas take suppressants to prevent heats and ruts and prevent pregnancy. The only thing that can stop suppressants from working is an encounter with one’s soulmate, where the two parties engage in unprotected sex. Prolonged use of suppressants in Omegas can lead to infertility, pregnancy complications and/or birth defects in the future.
Soul Mates – This can, in some instances, be considered its own trope. There are countless soulmate AU’s and fic-starters that are unrelated to A/B/O in the least (world goes from gray to color, handwriting on your soulmate’s wrist, etc.). However, when combined with A/B/O verse these individual tropes can really become something amazing. Soul mates can come in the form of Alpha/Alpha, Alpha/Beta, Alpha/Omega, Beta/Beta, Beta/Omega, or Omega/Omega parings (in fic, Omega/Omega and Alpha/Alpha pairings are typically marginalized and discriminated against in the same way the LGBT community is in real life). Soul mates are drawn to each other inexplicably and often times can simply tell by looking into one another’s eyes that they are soulmates. This trope is very dependent on the author of the particular fic.

Oh boy I feel sorry for your s/o
Older Brother Ajax cares about you a lot and only wants the best for you. So seeing someone else taking care of you, well he takes it as them taking his place as your protector
Ever since you were young he's always been taking you with him on adventures and showing you how to fight to protect yourself, but even so he's always been with you to make sure your safe
He sure doesn't trust anyone else to make sure your safe
Even though he's taught you how to fight, he doesn't let you know about his affiliation with the fatui, he never wants you to lose your light or your child-hood wonder
You love your brother but sometimes he can be a little too overprotective, so of course you choose to hide it from him that you have an s/o because knowing Ajax he's not going to give them a chance
However as much as you might try to hide it (and you try your hardest trust me) Ajax knows you too well. He's your older brother after all he can tell when you're hiding something from him
He doesn't make it obvious at first, he just writes it off as you just acting a little weird, but eventually he decides that after you've been disappearing for long amounts of time and canceling on him when you would usually jump at the chance to spend time with him, especially since he's been off in Liyue for quite awhile, he gets suspicious
He follows you one day when you leave the house all dressed up and seem happier than a clam
Ajax has no problem with that, he wants you to have everything this world can offer and seeing you happy brings back that spark he lost to the abyss, but why were you so happy for seemingly no reason?
Today wasn't any special occasion that he can remember
So he carefully follows behind you making sure that you don't notice him trailing you
Eventually you stop at some restaurant
He is SO confused poor boy doesn't understand why you would want to go get food from a restaurant all alone (you hadn't mentioned going out with friends?) especially when he made a point to tell you he was cooking this morning (no one can change my opinion his cooking is literally the best)
So when he sees you sit down at a table and seem to be waiting for someone, he decides to get a table close to you, not close enough for you to see him, but close enough for him to hear you
Anyways it had been about five minutes and you had ordered your drink and he was getting worried and had just about had enough of sitting watching you, but just as he was about to get up and go over to you and ask if you were okay and if you were upset, instead of at home
This boy honestly thinks he did something wrong for you to have not been spending as much time with him, it never occurs to him that you could be seeing someone, your his wonderful younger sibling who looks up to and adores him, and all his stories and skills that he teaches you
Honestly he basically raised you and your siblings with how much he loves you all, he always makes you feel safe and happy
Anyways back to your s/o, they they showed up just before Ajax could go over to you, and low and behold before he could even think who they were and why they were showing up with you for breakfast, they go and kiss you!🤯
Ajax exe. has stopped working. Who in the HELL has the nerve to kiss his sibling! Well he's about to find out. He starts stomping over ready to give this person a piece of his mind when something even MORE shocking happened you kissed them BACK, now he really stops in place for a second before he almost seems to teleport in front of you and pushes you two apart
To say you were shocked was an understatement, you were so startled you almost choked!
AJAX?! What are you doing here?!
Your shock quickly turned to panic when you saw your brothers steel gaze that looked downright murderous towards your s/o
Ajax decided to ignore you for the moment his attention was on your s/o who to their credit was calm and didn't look scared at all...yet at least Ajax thought
Your s/o as calm as they were, they were visibly confused and they made their confusion known as they asked "who are you?"

He doesn't make it obvious at first, he just writes it off as you just acting a little weird, but eventually he decides that after you've been disappearing for long amounts of time and canceling on him when you would usually jump at the chance to spend time with him, especially since he's been off in Liyue for quite awhile, he gets suspicious
He follows you one day when you leave the house all dressed up and seem happier than a clam
Ajax has no problem with that, he wants you to have everything this world can offer and seeing you happy brings back that spark he lost to the abyss, but why were you so happy for seemingly no reason?
Today wasn't any special occasion that he can remember
So he carefully follows behind you making sure that you don't notice him trailing you
Eventually you stop at some restaurant
He is SO confused poor boy doesn't understand why you would want to go get food from a restaurant all alone (you hadn't mentioned going out with friends?) especially when he made a point to tell you he was cooking this morning (no one can change my opinion his cooking is literally the best)
So when he sees you sit down at a table and seem to be waiting for someone, he decides to get a table close to you, not close enough for you to see him, but close enough for him to hear you
Anyways it had been about five minutes and you had ordered your drink and he was getting worried and had just about had enough of sitting watching you, but just as he was about to get up and go over to you and ask if you were okay and if you were upset, instead of at home
This boy honestly thinks he did something wrong for you to have not been spending as much time with him, it never occurs to him that you could be seeing someone, your his wonderful younger sibling who looks up to and adores him, and all his stories and skills that he teaches you
Honestly he basically raised you and your siblings with how much he loves you all, he always makes you feel safe and happy
Anyways back to your s/o, they they showed up just before Ajax could go over to you, and low and behold before he could even think who they were and why they were showing up with you for breakfast, they go and kiss you!🤯
