America Ferrera - Tumblr Posts

It feels like a satire. Or maybe reality is turning into an end credit scene for Barbie.

I can’t even be sad about it. I am not even shocked in any way.

That’s just how the patriarchy works.

The patriarchy really does win because how can Oscar voters nominate Ryan Gosling as Ken but not nominate Margot Robbie as Barbie and Greta Gerwig for directing?

Very happy that America Ferrera got a nomination though, she deserved it!

my barbie review

(obvious spoilers ahead)

okay so, i watched the barbie movie on the 22nd, and i must say, it exceeded my expectations and i was very happy with it.

the movie was quite political and i found it the most perfect opportunity to get political. the way the movie was done was that there were two worlds, barbie land, where all the barbies and kens reside, and the real world, where we all are.

i believe i should tackle each and every one of the movie aspects one by one in different topics.

let's start with barbie land. barbie land is a place where all the dolls of the barbie franchise live. you've got midge, allan, skipper, multiple different kens and multiple different barbies. in barbie land, it seems that the gender roles had switched. women took the higher-ranking jobs, like president, doctor, etc. while the men just had beach offs and basically did nothing, they were inferior. this was interesting since in the barbie franchise, ken was made just as barbie's boyfriend, that's all he was meant to be. he was at her every beck and call, he was the perfect boyfriend.

in the movie, ken(ryan gosling) was just barbie's friend. they didn't make them a couple, which i liked, they were just really good friends. however, ken wanted to be more. ken wanted to be acknowledged by barbie, included and respected. the kens in the movie weren't friendly with each other, they were all competitive and wanted to be better than the other. the kens were very dependent on their barbies and they believed that their whole purpose was just to get barbie to be their girlfriend. they basically believed that they were just barbie's boyfriend, nothing else.

barbie(margot robbie) was stereotypical barbie. the perfect, blue-eyed blondie that everyone thinks of right off the bat when someone mentions the name barbie. the thing is, she didn't do anything either. she mostly just woke up perfect, spent her day driving around and greeting other barbies, spends time at the beach and then has a dance party every night. it was the same thing every day. oh and "every night is girl's night." said barbie, ignorantly.

the way the barbies treated the kens were somewhat similar to how the men treated women; like they were secondary to everything. even though the gender roles are switched, the barbies were still women and the kens were still men. the way that the barbies ruled weren't discriminatory, they didn't sexualise the kens in any way, but when the kens ruled over, they brainwashed the barbies into believing that they their only roles were to do nothing and just serve their own kens. they ruled by making weird decisions like horses (you will only understand what i mean if you watch the movie, trust me).

however, i believed the only reason they had ruled this way was because when barbie and ken had come into the real world, ken was influenced by the men there. that's the reason he brought misogyny back into barbie land.(though when ken said "every night is boy's night." to barbie as a backfire, i was really happy LMAO)

all in all, all ken wanted was barbie's respect, her acknowledgement. he even said he lost interest in the patriarchy when he realised that horses weren't really a big thing in it. (he just wants a horse)

what i didn't like about what a few of the commentators and reviews said was that the movie was mostly focused on women. i believe that it wasn't. they talked about men's issues too. when ken said he wasn't suppose to cry, it made him weak but barbie told him it's okay to cry. barbie apologised to him for making him feel unseen and unheard, like his existence all depended on her. he got independency from this movie, he got closure. he is more than just barbie's boyfriend/love interest.

another thing that my friend had pointed out was that the way that the barbies ruled was similar to how the management in mattel(barbie's toy company) is. the ceo, cfo, etc. in mattel were all men. they believed that feminism, was women > men, when feminism is women = men. which is why the barbies didn't give the men any actual job, they just got lifeguard at the beach or surfer or anything beach related honestly.

when barbie went into the real world, she realised that women power wasn't as big as it was in her world. she realised that women weren't working in every high-ranking job like in her world and that they got constantly harassed and it somewhat shined a light on the whole situation she was in once she got back to barbie land. she probably realised that things were still one sided in barbie land, and they should strive to make both kens and barbies equal.

anyways, my favourite character was definitely allan. ally to the barbies, ally to the kens. after all, there is only one allan.

(possible spoilers)barbie query: if humans were to stay in barbie land, would they become a doll or stay a human?

okay, so i'm making a fic for barbie and i was thinking, since barbie decided to stay in the real world, she became an actual human, but what if it were reversed?

if a human were to stay too long at barbie land, would they become a doll or just stay human? because a human could never reverse their imperfections unlike a doll could but then again, it is technically a fantasy world because dolls could never actually become human so like ????

i would like some opinions and thoughts on this, thank you my barbies, kens and allan.

ideas for possible future barbie films

first one would be that barbie could be in the human world and then something bad suddenly starts happening over in barbie land and they find out it's that they're bringing back raquelle, and she's taking over the whole place cause she's jealous of barbie so she just schemes and ultimately keeps failing just like in barbie life in the dream house and there's tons of references to the old animated barbie movies and stuff

second one would be an allan spin-off where ALLAN GOES INTO THE REAL WORLD and helps save the universe or smth cause who could go wrong with an allan spin-off?

HTTYD 2 characters & cast photo.

I got this idea while commenting on @leffie-draws-fanart‘s works. She encouraged me to draw more characters from the HTTYD universe because they are amazingly different. Once again, their clothes killed me, but they were indeed fun to draw.

So the photo of their voice actors was the excuse I needed.

It’d be cool to do one with their dragons :D

#Mira-Marathon

Film Name: Barbie (2023); Production studios: Warner Bros., Heyday Films, LuckyChap Entertainment, Mattel Films, NBGG Pictures; Director by: Greta Gerwig; Screenwriters: Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach; Starring: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Will Ferrell; Genres: Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy, Melodrama; Running Time: 1 hours, 54 minutes;

"Barbie" is an exciting musical film where Barbie, faced with uncertainty and deep introspection, embarks on a journey to unravel the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of her perfect world and ultimately find answers that can redefine her understanding of herself and reality. in which she lives. It's a fun movie with great musical numbers and great acting, but the plot can be predictable.

My rating: 8/10

Okay here we go

The Barbie Movie 2023: a transcendental experience

I would like to preface this by admitting that I cried essentially throughout the entire movie. I was crying in the first twenty minutes when Barbie entered the Real World and found that it was the complete opposite of BarbieLand. Several other people have made this comparison but the scene where Barbie gets catcalled and harassed on the street, where she feels too conscious about everything (the tea scene with Ruth especially) is so vital because that is how every young girl I have met has felt when they begin puberty. Ken, of course exemplifies the masculine perception, the confidence and esteem that comes with realising that "Men rule the world". The way he is not a bad character but the draw of power is so strong even for someone as "accessory" as a Ken doll and so he goes along with the patriarchal system. Barbie feeling utterly lost after learning that she has not been in fact empowering women as she had thought, rather she was a "fascist". My take is that the criticism against Barbie is valid in that there is little diversity among the dolls and yes there are certain things that can be improved upon. However it is parallel-y true that Barbie can be ANYTHING. Especially in a world where success and happiness have come to be defined by such limited criteria Barbie rightly points out that most girls are ordinary, they are not scientists or presidents or nobel prize winners, however that does not mean they are unworthy of consideration, of respect and of care.

I am unsure what is the broad internet verdict on Barbie but I do believe that the movie encapsulates a very specific feminist experience where it's not that men are at fault for everything, Ken does ultimately admit, along with the directors of Mattel, that he does not want to be in power all the time. However, Gerwig refuses to dictate how men should behave, they will have to go to the Real World themselves and figure it out. Barbie however gets to learn that just saying "I don't want anything to change" does not stop things from changing. As someone who uses the exact same phrase several times, it hit me hard when, despite her best efforts, things kept changing. The loss of control and increasing uncertainty that adulthood brings is enough to make anyone into a Depression Barbie (complete with BBC Pride and Prejudice) but Gerwig also says that just because things are changing does not mean that we are simply helpless. We have people around us, mothers and grandmothers and daughters and Weird Barbies, who are there to support us. America Ferrara's rant about how women can never be perfect or likeable is a cinematic masterpiece- it reflects the constant discourse around what it means to be a modern woman and ultimately puts forward that women can be "anything", they don't need to be only perfect- if nothing they do is perfect then there is no need to desire perfection, they can remain as they are. Sasha was a surprisingly heartwarming character, I was fully expecting her to be annoying. All the Kens were hilarious, of course, the little Sex Education cast reunion was adorable. The style of the movie may not suit everyone's taste, it is loud, over the top and camp as fuck, everything is a reference, the fourth wall is essentially non-existent. But at its core the Barbie Movie is a lesson in growing up- it is a tale of someone who has to find herself and accept herself before becoming a human. Interestingly, Barbie reflects adolescence quite literally (I was half expecting Gerwig to put in a menstruating reference, but it makes sense that she didn't, considering the no-vagina thing) and the last scene where she asks to see her gynecologist is not only symbolic of her becoming a human but also of her becoming a woman. She is a doll in the beginning like pre-adolescent girls are often called but then she goes through terrible things where she is not fully doll, but not fully human, and lastly when she has become human, shedding her doll part. Adolescent girls are rarely allowed to be anything other than perfect "dolls" even when they are having the most terrible period of their lives and Barbie's constant desire to make things return to as they were shows how she also wants to remain a doll, but once she accepts that things need to change she starts shedding her doll nature and starts becoming human. This is still a sad process but now Barbie knows (thanks to Ruth) that no matter what she will be okay as a human.

In conclusion Barbie is not a movie that is of the feminist genre, at least not to me, rather it is a coming of age story for some of the most iconic characters in pop culture.

I hope that they feel good about themselves watching it. Like I don't know, I feel like there's some sort of relief in this movie in that the message ultimately is you're good. You're good as you are. You are enough just as you are. You're crushing it. - Margot Robbie

It Is Literally Impossible To Be A Woman. Youre So Beautiful And So Smart. And It Kills Me You Dont Think

“It is literally impossible to be a woman. You’re so beautiful and so smart. And it kills me you don’t think you’re good enough. Like we have to always be extraordinary. But somehow we’re always doing it wrong. You have to be thin, but not too thin, and you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin! You have to have money, but you can’t ask for money, because that’s crass. You have to be a boss, but you can’t be mean. You have to lead, but you can’t squash other people’s ideas. You’re supposed to love being a mother, but don’t talk about you kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men’s bad behavior which is insane but if you point that out you’re accused of complaining. You’re supposed to stay pretty for men but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you’re supposed to be a part of the sisterhood but always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged so find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old. Never be rude. And never show off. Never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It’s too hard! It’s too contradictory! And nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong but also everything is your fault! I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie ourselves into knots so that people will like us.” -Gloria (America Ferrera, BARBIE)

Remember how we were little and we loved pink and Barbie and dolls and princesses?

Remember how we got old enough to realize that people were making fun of us and not enough people told us to ignore them so we got embarrassed and we hated ourselves. Pink was our least favorite color until perhaps recently when we were neutral towards it at best.

But something in us changed when we decided we needed to see Barbie (2023). The women and girls I saw wearing their best pinks today. I purposely bought MYSELF something pink for the first time I can remember.

We’re giving ourselves the freedom we took away.

I work at a movie theater.

And personally? To be in the tickets booth, and see young girls, teenagers, adult women, coming in to see Barbie,

the most highlighter pink outfits, some of them coming in with the dolls they’re dressed as, laughing to each other, cheering for each other,

to see the men they’re coming to see it with, dressed in pink, cheering them on, taking their pictures with smiles and cheers in the lobby at the photo op

touches something so deep in me

I can’t say any nuances of the movie that haven’t already been said, but like, fuck man, love is so deep and so kind and to be able to see glimpses of it from behind my little ticket desk makes me a little less nihilistic.

One of the things about this movie that I think is so important is that even women who are considered beautiful by society are made to feel that are not. For whatever reason.

AND those women, like all other women, are constantly subject to complete objectification. Even though they have some privileges that many women do not.

So I think that, while this was a little funny (because I, a Jewish Latina girl, have never looked like her), I did also think that it was a besides the point kind of comment. Even women who play the main character in every movie are made to feel bad about themselves for every little thing. That was the point of that crisis, imo.

when barbie thinks that she's ugly and sad, the narrator breaks the fourth wall and is like if barbie wasn't played by margo robbie, this scene would be more believable and i am just, jfc
