I can’t believe Half-Life Alyx was such a dealbreaker for so many people. They say it was ‘cheap’ to retcon ep. 2 & not let anything super traumatizing happen in the series. But, I have to admit that’s a stupid take.

The only reason ep. 2 exists is because it retconned ep. 1, and now that hla has came out I can finally rationalize why ep. 3/hl3 didn’t come out in ‘08.

Marc Laidlaw has stated multiple times that he doesn’t believe in ‘canon vs. non-canon’ and that when he retired he wanted a new generation of writers to take over. It’s not his story anymore, therefore it’s going to skew away artistically. Half-Life is non-linear, & it has always had multiple points of view. If that’s really the complaint, you don’t like Half-Life as a whole and you sure as hell aren’t gonna like the next installment (whatever that may entail) I’m starting to believe that people just don’t wanna play as a female character that talks and is just as important as Gordon.

I can see why everyone expects disappointment, especially since the game industry has sucked for a long while now. But that’s not Valve. Half-life Alyx is insanely interesting and one of the best VR experiences out there. Alyx is an incredibly written character. She’s not objectified or watered down to a simple npc, she’s a peer and an equal.
