Big news everyone, it's the third wednesday in october and you know what that means.... it's HAGFISH DAY! Little known fact about me but I'm a huge fan of the hagfish. I wish that I too could respond to attacked by producing over a gallon of slime and suffocating my enemies.

There is now a polar bear. It seems poorly adjusted to this climate of skeleton/wizard hostility. It looks as us with judgement in its eyes and pads off to the north in search of colder weather (and more love n belly scritches).

RED ALERT: tumblr custom blog domains are at risk of becoming a paid feature

Custom domains are one of the coolest if not the coolest feature on tumblr. I think the ability to mess with formatting and theming and do whatever the heck you want on your blog (and do that for FREE) is an absolutely incredible feature from the days of internet yore. It's such a unique way to express yourself and the ~vibes~ of your blog, not to mention such a great entrypoint into learning web basics.

Mr matt @photomatt CEO of auttomattic sir please don't do this. PLEASE. I know tumblr needs money, but please brainstorm other ideas. I fear that this will simply make this feature less used. Especially if this retroactively will delete currently existing themes, it would just be really sad to have this feature get paywalled. Or at least run a survey or a trial that you can revert if it doesn't turn out to actually make much revenue.

I also feel similarly sad about making the backend WP, but if there's a way to do that without breaking any existing themes I'd be OK with it. But if the backend becomes WP then I think it only makes sense to start charging for it, so my ask would be for you to pretty please leave it be :) Maybe build some e-commerce on that to make some revenue for tumblr and users. And then you could integrate it with mainsite more easily if it's all custom!
