This might be totally self-indulgent, but Hunter's arc reminded me a lot of Soren from The Dragon Prince! They're very different personalities, but they have similar arcs, and I also just think they'd get along.

I imagine them having an elder brother/younger brother type of dynamic, though granted Hunter is much sharper and well-studied of the two. A lot of their bonding is just Hunter infodumping and Soren trying his best to follow along. Hunter's magic staff would probably also blow Soren's mind.
