Work in Progress

I got back into making art / digital collages in GIMP a few weeks ago, after years of not touching the program and wanted to make a place to post my creations.

"The Oldest View" (Grey/Green) (Aesthetic/Moodboard)

An aesthetic/moodboard made in GIMP with stock images from pexels.com. Based on "The Oldest View" by Kane Pixels on Youtube.

Additional thoughts beneath the cut:

Gah, seems like the compression is flattening the colors in this a bit - if you open the moodboard in a different tab and zoom in, you might be able to see it better; this one is not just pure grey, but meant to have a greenish tint/shadows, referencing the shots in the series that are black-white-and-green.

This one was a bit challenging to make (because the center of the series are a distinct location and a distinct entity), but overall also very fun. Again, I tried to make this with just stock images and I wanted to use the dithering option again. I think it turned out pretty well!

"Frutiger Aero Inspired" (Aesthetic/Moodboard)

"Frutiger Aero Inspired" (Aesthetic/Moodboard)

[sources: x / x / x / x / x ]

Aesthetic/moodboard made in GIMP with free stock images from unsplash. I tried to capture the general aesthetic of 'Frutiger Aero'.

Further thoughts below the cut:

I am pretty sure I didn't manage to be 100% accurate to the Frutiger Aero aesthetic, but I think its passable for a first attempt. I just tried to capture the 'vibe', the general imagery and colors associated with it.

(Sidenote: pexels.com makes it a lot easier to find photos again, whereas with unsplash, it took more effort. I recommend getting an account and making picture collections to easily find the photos again.)

"(Ivan Beck and) The Backrooms"

Digital collage made in GIMP with stock photos from pexels.com. Inspired by Kane Pixels' iteration of the backrooms (on youtube), the character of Ivan Beck, as well as the OST/music and its cover art for the series (also on youtube).

Some thoughts beneath the cut:

The mystery of who Ivan Beck is, what happened to him and his motivations are fun to dig into. There is a lot of symbolism in the Backrooms series and its supplemental material that I just really enjoy exploring visually; eyes, the sun and the sea for example. So making this while further trying out GIMP was a lot of fun.

I am particularly proud of how I turned the iris/pupil of the eye into a sun and made it look good.

As an aside, I find it is a good challenge to try and make art only using screenshots of a series or only stock images, hence why I have made some other art in this way as well that I will hopefully post soon.

"Out Of Place"

Two digital collages made in GIMP with screenshots from "The Oldest View" by Kane Pixels on Youtube, which includes use of the Julien Reverchon Giant made by Kevin Obregon.

Additional thoughts below the cut:

These are the variations of the movie poster practice pics I posted earlier. This style takes a bit of inspiration from surrealist artist René Magritte actually, what with taking a human(oid) silhouette and replacing the inside of it. These also serve as mirror images to each other with how I replaced Wyatt and the Giant, in a way showing how they are both 'out of place' in different points in the story.

These were really the 'prototypes' for the movie poster(s) I then did. It was a nice challenge to try and find pictures that would not just be great mirrors for each other, but also had distinct silhouettes *and* fit into each other.

"Untitled Album/Song Cover Art #2"

Digital album/playlist cover made in GIMP with a stock image as well as various stock images converted into textures from pexels.com.

Most of the sources listed are pics from pexels.com that I turned into textures. They made creating this piece a lot of fun. This was mainly just me trying out stuff and then building onto the result of that experimentation, so this was a great piece to make purely for learning purposes.

"Who's The Giant?" (The Oldest View/Who's Lila Crossover Mockup)

"Who's The Giant?" (The Oldest View/Who's Lila Crossover Mockup)

[sources: x / x / x ]

Digital Collage made in GIMP with screenshots from The Oldest View by Kane Pixels and a photo of the Julien Reverchon Giant made by Kevin Obregon, in the dithering color palette and style (and using some dialogue from) the videogame "Who's Lila?" by Garage Heathen. A crossover fanart of both pieces of media, if you will. The font is Dogica Pixel.

Additional thoughts below the cut:

This happens when I make fanart for multiple pieces of media and a) I start thinking about using the artstyle of one for the other and b) there are actually some similarities that are fun to explore. Hence, this piece.

I like how both pieces of media include themes of remembering/forgetting, and about attention, though in different ways.

Fun fact I learned - first crop the image, then use the dither filter on the final piece, not the other way around. I actually have a version of this piece in a larger size, but the crop made it look pretty bad, so I uploaded a specifically-made smaller one to avoid that issue.

(Also because I am not sure how well it shows up, the little rectangle in the lower right corner is Wyatt's phone.)

(Additionally. Fun fact - I originally planned to have Wyatt be the right-side portrait but I sadly haven't been able to make that happen with the footage from the webseries.)

(3rd addition: Who’s Lila features a Daemon and apparently, Arby from the tv-series 'Utopia' as a model for an FBI agent. Stuff that Kane Pixels has also expressed interest in (Daemon by Daniel Suarez, the tv show Utopia).)
