Kanade was just an ordinary villager who studied how to use medical herbs and flowers for the people. The fairly known "doctor" grew jealous and accuses Kanade of witchcraft which leads to other people growing wary of them. They are ostracized and chased out by the townspeople. They lock themselves in an abandoned mansion and continue to grow their herbs there.

Honami was supposed to get married, but the fear of being binded to someone she did not love for the rest of her life - divorce is illegal - frightened her and so, she ran off. She ran and ran and ran until the sun went down and her surroundings became unrecognizable. She was officially lost in the forest wearing her wedding gown and uncomfortable heels.

After calming down and wandering around for a bit, she came across Kanade's humble abode mansion. She steels her nerves and knocks on the door. Kanade is surprised to see Honami - it had been a while since she last had contact with another human, the animals could only comfort her for so long - and is hesitant to let Honami in, but she begs to stay there for the night.
