I talk about it a little in this post and its various comments, but I think that the themes of life, death, and immortality that exist within KNY are genuinely some of the most interesting parts of the series at large. The most prominent and straightforward example of this exists within Muzan’s desperate quest for a perfect eternal life, which directly conflicts with Kagaya’s belief in the longevity of the human will. The former is concrete, physical, and simple where the latter remains abstract and very difficult to define.

It’s obviously displayed in Kagaya’s death scene;

But is also scattered throughout the manga in different moments — Sanemi’s first meeting with Kagaya is one of them, because it’s where Kagaya first mentions how little he thinks his life matters when he has an heir to continue aiding and leading the organization for him. He finds his eternity in the long standing effort his family (both biological and chosen) has made and will continue to make in freeing the world of the demonic blight. Which is a philosophy that he makes sure Muzan knows is followed by everyone who fights and lives or dies for the organization and its cause. The young men and women who didn’t pass Final Selection, the demon slayers on Mt. Natagumo, Rengoku, and so on so forth.

He dies knowing that he has a guaranteed legacy, and that Muzan’s inherent nature as a demon means he will never be allowed to do the same. Why do you think he becomes so angry when Kagaya mentions how his death means the death of all his demons too? He knows just as well as Kagaya does how limited he is. There is no one to avenge him or continue his work if he fails the way Kagaya and the Ubuyashiki have always had the Demon Slayer Corps. And even when the organization disbands, they have the certainty of a peaceful, demon-free future waiting for them. That is what they have all worked for, and the desire for tranquillity will always exist within humanity no matter who the enemy becomes.

Yorichii understood that very well… but his older twin brother, Michikatsu, could not fathom it.

I Talk About It A Little In This Post And Its Various Comments, But I Think That The Themes Of Life,
I Talk About It A Little In This Post And Its Various Comments, But I Think That The Themes Of Life,

He was utterly befuddled by Yorichii’s smile as he thought of the uncertain future, imagining a generation even stronger and more capable of saving lives than they were. He didn’t help the Sengoku Era demon slayers develop breathing styles or teach them or do anything because he wanted to be remembered — it was because he believed in the cause as earnestly and as fiercely as the old families who had followed it for centuries before him. By his own admission, Michikatsu had become a demon slayer out of insecurity and jealousy. He questions how his younger brother managed to leave so much more of himself behind when he was the one who became immortal, but he did this to himself.

He abandoned his wife and his children alongside his personal honor and his dreams and his cause and that’s why he can’t even begin to fathom Yorichii’s hopes for the future even when its manifestation is standing right in front of him;

I Talk About It A Little In This Post And Its Various Comments, But I Think That The Themes Of Life,
I Talk About It A Little In This Post And Its Various Comments, But I Think That The Themes Of Life,

Together, Yorichii and Michikatsu act as the second biggest philosophical contrast in KNY. They are the everlasting legacy of a man who could not care to leave one behind and the forgotten samurai who was utterly obsessed with the idea of having one, but didn’t know what that really meant. Tanjiro and Muichiro are also wonderful examples of this, because Tanjiro has absolutely no direct relation to Yorichii, and yet he effectively acts as his heir. On the other hand, Muichiro is explicitly noted to be Michikatu’s descendent by Kokushibo, but he is originally thought to be a Sun Breather’s descendant and rejects Kokushibo altogether. More than that, Kokushibo is the one who ultimately kills him.

Michikatsu literally and metaphorically kills any chance he has at having a legacy with his own hands, while Yorichii aids Tanjiro long after death.

It’s a beautifully painful contrast.

The first of a set of three colored digital drawings featuring Sokka and Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. In each drawing, Sokka is depicted as he appears in book two with a sleevless blue tunic. Zuko is depicted in the dark clothing of the Blue Spirit costume with his hair short and spikey as it appears in the middle of book two. The linework in each image is extremely sloppy and unfinished because the artist has a personally vendetta against lineart today. Each image has a blueish grey tint to it and is signed "Gasmeros" in the bottom right corner.

Image 1 of 3. Sokka and Zuko are sitting cross-legged with their backs together, and a rope binds them together at the waist. Their arms are straight against their sides and bound to each other's at the wrist. They cannot see each other's faces at this angle. Sokka has his front facing the viewer at a 3/4ths angle, and Zuko has his back to the viewer. Zuko is sitting slightly hunched, and from this angle, the viewer can see a small portion of his face. His cowl is still overing most of hsi head, but the Blue Spirit mask sits in his lap. Sokka looks slightly frazzled with wide eyes, but he has a slight grin on his face as he talks. He's rambling and has five speech bubbles surrounding them.

Speech bubble 1: "I mean, I've seen the wanted posters, obviously,"

Bubble 2: "but Aang told me about how you rescued him from Zhao,"

Bubble 3: "which was absolutely badass, according to his story,"

Bubble 4: "and beyond, y'know, saving the world's last hope, you also kinda saved my life? We were super sick."

Bubble 5: "So it's possible I've been pretty excited to meet you—"
Image 2 of 3. A top down shot of Zuko's lap, where the Blue Spirit mask has fallen. The band to keep the mask secured has been cut close to the right side. Bound as he is, Zuko can't grab it. The is a speech bubble to the right, where Sokka (out of shot) says, "—So I guess my point is"
Image 3 of 3. A bust shot of Zuko at a 3/4ths angle with Sokka as his back, a reversal of the first image. Zuko is hunched over slightly, looking down at his mask (out of shot) with wide eyes, his brow furrowed, and a small frown. A few drops of sweat dot his face, and he looks less than thrilled to be here. On the left side of his face (from the viewer's perspective), there is a cut just in front of his ear. The fabric of his cowl is torn where the cut is, and two drops of blood drip from the wound. The implication is that this is what caused the mask's band to break.

Sokka sits at Zuko's back, his expression obscured by the angle. There are two final speech bubbles coming from him. The first says, "I don't really know you," and the second says, "But I trust you."

A montage of three colored digital drawings of Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender and the badger frog that appears in season 3, episode 12, "The Western Air Temple." In all images, Zuko is in the outfit he appears in in the episode.

The first image is in the top left corner. Zuko has his back facing the viewer and he is holding a red lined portrait of his uncle in his hands. But instead of looking at it, he stares down at the old mattress he's placed his travel essentials on. In a red and black bag, there is the brown and green badger frog that Zuko talks to in the episode. It is staring innocently up at Zuko with bright green eyes. There is an arrow pointing to it, connecting it to the word "Stowaway." There is a speech bubble from Zuko with "..." or three ellipses to indicate silence. It's clear Zuko doesn't quite know how to react to the situation.

The second image is in the lower left corner. It is a more sloppily drawn picture of Zuko being bitten on the pinky finger by the badger frog. He is facing the camera, arms halfway in the air in surprise as the badger from dangles form his left hand. His expression is startled and pained, with his teeth bared, his brow furrowed, and his eyes cartoonishly wide. The badger frog seems unbothered and is calmly hanging from Zuko's pinky. The linework and coloring are sloppier than in the other two drawings in order to add to a humorous vibe.

The third image is on the right side of the page. Zuko is holding the badger frog up in the air with two hands as he stares down to the side. Momo is there, reaching as if he wants to hold the badger frog. Zuko has a large frown on his face as he stares down at Momo, holding the badger frog well out of reach. Despite being protected from whatever crimes Momo plans to commit, the badger frog is flailing in Zuko's grip, its legs kicking and its mouth open. There are wobbly purple lines coming from the badger frog's mouth, indicating some manner or strange, potentially warbling noise. Perhaps the sound of an angry frog.

The entire image has a purple background, darker at the top with a gradient of dots towards a lighter bottom. Each individual drawing has a faded blue scriblle behind it. In the tip left corner, the piece is signed "Gasmeros."

emotional support frog

who will absolutely eat your hand.

A follow-up image to the previous collage. Zuko is facing the viewer, looking extremely nervous as he holds his right arm (left side to the viewer) in the air. The badger frog is attached at the wrist and has Zuko's entire hand in its mouth. Zuko has wide eyes, frazzled hair, and a few sweat drops on his face. He looks like he's barely holding it together. An arrow points to where the badger frog is biting Zuko, with text that says, "His entire hand." There is a second arrow pointing at Zuko's face that says, "Absolutely NOT panicking." The "NOT" is underlined. This is obviously false. The picture has a purple background with a slight gradient and is signed "Gasmeros" in the upper left corner.
