one looking to escape, another looking to be found; one looking to belong, another looking for home all are lost and hoping new haven has the answers they need. "we are the reckless, we are the wild youth. chasing visions of our futures. one day, we'll reveal the truth; that one will die before he gets there." youth by daughter.

birds were now being added to his list of things he hated. fucking birds. he had no idea what it was about his outfit or his umbrella that made those damned avians so obsessed with him but unfortunately their curiosity left his umbrella-- his best protection from the accursed sun-- tattered and full of holes. there was a chance he would have been alright, he kept the majority of his body covered when he ventured out during daylight hours, but his neck and face were now the most vulnerable. he had to think and act quickly.
using his speed to his advantage, he cut through the town quickly and made his way directly to the funeral home he had passed a few nights ago when he was out strolling at a safer time. jimmying open the back door, so he could avoid any potential staff up front, he snuck through the back halls until he found the room he was looking for. the morgue. "this feels like a cliche," he mumbled to himself as he stepped into the remarkably colder room and let out a sigh. now, to some coming here might seem like a weird-- or possibly cliched-- choice but while new haven had plenty of stores or restaurants he could have ducked into they all had one thing in common. front facing walls filled with windows to let people look in and get enticed; walls filled with windows to let the daylight in. the funeral homes morgue had none.
taking off his overcoat and hanging it on the rack by the door, he took off his gloves next and tucked them into his coat pocket as it hung; followed by his sunglasses; lastly taking off his cap and placing it on the rack as well. rolling up his sleeves as he made himself comfortable-- as if he had any right to be there-- he checked his watch and groaned when he saw the time. hours to go before sunset. "i don't suppose any of you know a good way to pass the time here?" he deadpanned as he glanced over his shoulders at the mortuary coolers lining the back wall. shrugging, almost as if he actually expected an answer, the vampire suddenly froze; his entire body tensed as he heard the rattling of the doorknob.
standing, awkwardly, in the middle of the examination room he slowly turned to face the door as it opened. there weren't many places for him to hide so he figured facing the intrusion head on would be the smartest move. well. technically he was the intrusion. maybe he should have tried to hide.

"i can explain..." he offered up hastily, opting to try and be diplomatic for once rather than relying on compuslion to get himself out of the tight spot he put himself in.

moving past the salesclerk as they approached the bows, he was quick to pick up the advanced model. balancing it in his right hand, he gently bounced it a bit to gauge it's weight before gripping it properly so he could lightly pull on the bowstring to get a feel for it's tension. not bad for something man made. he'd still, eventually, craft himself a more natural bow with harvested wood that he could embue with magic but for quick defenses-- and for the sake of following through on small talk-- this could work.
"you look like you can handle yourself," he commented as he looked over at the other; his eyes briefly lingering on the man's arms before flitting up to meet his gaze. "those," he added on as he gestured at his own canines, though less sharp than the other's, to call attention back to the fangs he'd caught a brief glimpse of, "would probably give you some advantages as well."
he stood there then, still holding the bow, as a beat of silence fell over them. what was he supposed to say now? "do you..." he questioned, his brows furrowing again as he tried to think of something to say; though comforting other's wasn't something he would consider a strong suit. "do you know how to fight?"

as soon as they reached the corner where the archery equipment was located River picked up two bow models "well this one is the model for advanced and this other one is for professionals, unfortunately the model for beginners was sold out because suddenly many people started wanting to learn, you know right" he smiled, his fangs jutting out for a brief moment. "well, I'm worried, a few weeks ago there was an attack on the cinema, a team of volunteers was sent there to fight some strange hooded men, thankfully the cinema was closed and no one died" commented River "I'm a little scared of being attacked when I come to work."

nights like this made him painfully aware of how hard it was for him to sleep in a cold, empty bed. he was restless; he was anxious. in his restlessness he'd already unplugged every single electronic in his home in an attempt to drown out the annoying, subtle buzzing sound that they all emitted but it wasn't enough. he still couldn't sleep. so he wandered.
ambling through town, he still wasn't used to his new surroundings but he wasn't taking the time to memorize streets or get a lay of the land. he was just walking. doing anything he could to fill the time and hopes that, eventually, he would be tired.
much to his surprise, new haven wasn't completely asleep itself. making his way towards the glow of a store front that was still open, he stepped inside and glanced around at the shelves. he wasn't sure why a sports shop would need to be opened this late but he wasn't going to question it.

"you're open late," he mumbled as he lifted his head as his attention settled on the man behind the counter. "do you have..." he sighed, his words stretching out into a lazy drawl as he tried to come up with an excuse for himself to be there, "...any archery equipment?" he didn't agree with it but according to humans hunting was a sport so he didn't think it was too much of a stretch to ask for.

it was a pretty dull night in the store, well of course this specific shift used to be pretty empty, but it was already past midnight and not a single soul entered that place. River was sitting in a swivel chair, his feet were on the wooden counter as the vampire lazily filed his nails. however, upon seeing a figure entering, he instantly got up and went to the entrance.

"thank you." letting out a breath as anders flitted around the room to close the curtains and blinds, the vampire leaned against the wall for a moment; already more comfortable. leaving his umbrella to rest in a corner, he took off his gloves and stuffed them into the pocket of his over shirt before unfastening the buttons and peeling it from his frame to drape it over the back of a chair; lastly he removed his sunglasses, folding them and letting them hang from the collar of his undershirt as he turned back to the dragonblood.
"i wouldn't go so far to say i was courting you, things are much less formal in todays age; and i appreciate that you already seem to think so highly of me, but i wouldn't be offended by a quick rut. i'd enjoy it even," he teased with a soft laugh under his breath and a toothy grin. "i am curious, after all. are you that hot all over?" he mused as he moved across the room, his right hand finding it's way back to rest against anders chest. "i wonder how long i'd last pinned beneath you, smothered by you and your heat." he was being forward on purpose. it wasn't every day he had men that looked like anders blushing like that so he was having his fun. though he was genuinely curious. "i think you're doing fine already."
dropping his hand back to his side, he took a step back and looked around the room again. "you need art or, well, something on the walls but we can worry about that later. but yes, please," he answered with a loose nod. "show me the rest of your clothes."

"Oh oh my bad. Let me get them." Anders moved to close all of the curtains and made sure there was no more sunlight pouring in from outside as he looked around. He turned on some lamps he had gotten filling the room with warm artificial light instead. Hopefully that would make Elgin more comfortable in his home. Anders looks around, there was a chair, a couch, some tables and lamps. Basic. He had no art on the walls, nothing in the way of decorations yet. It made him miss his old room, in his friend's home. It wasn't as large or opulent as an apartment, but the stone walls and wooden cot had been home and his own.
"A prude? OH! You are intending to court me. Well we can but I would like for a bit more artisty and effort on my part. You are worth far more than me simply bringing you to my den and a rut." Anders was mortified the other thought this was how he went about showing his interest in others, he was positively a terrible host if that were the case. "I would do far better. I will next time." he said his cheeks a bit red, he fought the rising heat, breathing out to keep himself calm and his temperature cool.
"Would you like to see my clothes still?" he asked a bit eager to show off his new things, a neatly folded pile of shirts, pants, and shoes, his beloved leather jacket still on him but that seemed to be the only outer wear he had.

biography
set up to have everything he could ever want, born into a long line of self-proclaimed "powerful" vampires, in the north eastern states the clairemont name meant something. his family had spent centuries building their wealth and power, building their criminal empire, and as a young fledgling he was eager to take part.
broken noses; broken kneecaps; broken hearts. elgin was wild and dangerous in his youth, going above and beyond to earn his families favor and to prove to everyone that the deserved the power they held over the streets at night. he became almost as infamous in his own right as his families name; he, on his own, was almost as terrifying due to his bloodlust and his blatant disregard for anyone other than himself to the point he would even screw over weaker members of his family. he was drunk with power. he could have anything he wanted with a mere flick of his wrist.
until his gender presented. while they never made a comment about it out right, elgin still remembers the way his parents eyes darkened with disappointment when he presented as an omega; as somebody destined to be weaker; as breeding stock. suddenly he went from being their greatest accomplishment, their golden child, to being their greatest liability. the shift in how they regarded him was sobering.
moving away from his more violent tendencies, he began to mature and question his families desperation for power; their desperation to hold onto a way of life that was not only dated by destined for self destruction. the distance between him and his family deepened, eventually growing into mutual disdain and hatred. the only redeeming thing they had left was his youngest sibling tristan. he was nothing like their parents in that he didn't care what elgin was. omega, alpha, it didn't matter-- all he seemed to care about was the fact elgin was his older brother; and elgin loved tristan dearly-- still does.
leaving was the hardest thing he ever did, but after tristan presented as an alpha and was fast-tracked into being the heir to their families criminal empire elgin knew he couldn't stay. he needed to find somewhere else, somewhere so far away from his family that their name would mean nothing, so he could start over for himself and-- eventually-- bring his little brother along.

As Far As I Could Get by Florence + The Machine was only available as a B-side on a Record Store Day exclusive vinyl. Because of its unique release, a lot of people are simply unaware of this songs existence, which is a shame because I genuinely think it's one of their best. I am holding onto the hope that it'll get an official digital release in 2025 for the 10th anniversary of Hb3, but until then, enjoy this vinyl rip audio provided by Churn Ken Lee.
