Moving Past The Salesclerk As They Approached The Bows, He Was Quick To Pick Up The Advanced Model. Balancing

moving past the salesclerk as they approached the bows, he was quick to pick up the advanced model. balancing it in his right hand, he gently bounced it a bit to gauge it's weight before gripping it properly so he could lightly pull on the bowstring to get a feel for it's tension. not bad for something man made. he'd still, eventually, craft himself a more natural bow with harvested wood that he could embue with magic but for quick defenses-- and for the sake of following through on small talk-- this could work.
"you look like you can handle yourself," he commented as he looked over at the other; his eyes briefly lingering on the man's arms before flitting up to meet his gaze. "those," he added on as he gestured at his own canines, though less sharp than the other's, to call attention back to the fangs he'd caught a brief glimpse of, "would probably give you some advantages as well."
he stood there then, still holding the bow, as a beat of silence fell over them. what was he supposed to say now? "do you..." he questioned, his brows furrowing again as he tried to think of something to say; though comforting other's wasn't something he would consider a strong suit. "do you know how to fight?"

as soon as they reached the corner where the archery equipment was located River picked up two bow models "well this one is the model for advanced and this other one is for professionals, unfortunately the model for beginners was sold out because suddenly many people started wanting to learn, you know right" he smiled, his fangs jutting out for a brief moment. "well, I'm worried, a few weeks ago there was an attack on the cinema, a team of volunteers was sent there to fight some strange hooded men, thankfully the cinema was closed and no one died" commented River "I'm a little scared of being attacked when I come to work."

As Far As I Could Get by Florence + The Machine was only available as a B-side on a Record Store Day exclusive vinyl. Because of its unique release, a lot of people are simply unaware of this songs existence, which is a shame because I genuinely think it's one of their best. I am holding onto the hope that it'll get an official digital release in 2025 for the 10th anniversary of Hb3, but until then, enjoy this vinyl rip audio provided by Churn Ken Lee.

biography (tw: death)
the settlement he called home in the wildlands, in elhead forest, kept their distance from most of the others. a community of recluses; of loners; of hypocrites. he had always been curios about the other species, and humans, but his settlement had a more self-sustaining mentality that unfortunately poisoned his mind; to this day, he still finds it hard to trust others, or to ask them for help.
while he loved his life in the wildlands, fending for himself and taking care of himself by any means necessary, the portals in elhead forest kept calling to him. they were like seductive sirens with songs that haunted him in his sleep. he tried to ignore it, he tried to keep his distance, he tried to act like they weren't even there-- but in the end his curiosity got the best of him and he found himself stumbling blindly into the world of humans.
it was not an easy transition; calling it awkward is just being polite. humans were loud, messy, violent, selfish, beasts that took what they wanted simply because they saw it first. in his eyes they were brutish and, for lack of a better word, horrible. until he met him. christopher parsons. he was the exact opposite of every human alton had met up until that point. he didn't hesitate to show alton kindness; to take him in and give him a place to sleep, and live, so he could have a stable roof over his head. he even brought alton to his shop and taught him how to work on cars, and machines, so he could learn a trade and have something to fall back on if he ever needed money.
they spent years together. alton trusted him so much that he revealed his true nature to him, he even took christopher through one of the portals so he could show him the wildlands where he grew up. with christopher, alton finally understood why other settlements and other fairfolk were so fascinated with humans-- but it was too good to be true. unfortunately christopher was sick and there was nothing they could do to change that. alton was gifted with natural magic and spellwork that called upon nature, but one thing he never managed to learn-- or maybe it was just something he was never meant to be capable of-- was healing magic and spells. he tried everything he could think of to save his human friend but, in the end, the sickness one.
in burying christopher, alton realized all too late that he cared for the man far more than simple friendship. he loved him and now he'd lost him.
wandering around for years, flitting back and forth between this world and the fae realm, he struggled staying in either place for too long; he struggled making a home for himself again. he no longer felt like he belonged. without christopher, the human world felt foreign again and empty but whenever he went back to the fae realm all he did was miss humanity; he would never admit it but he missed the noise; the mess; the people.
eventually he found himself heading to new haven. he heard, in passing, that it was a sanctuary of sorts and, well, what else did he have to lose?

an hour, maybe two. they barely knew each other and things were leading towards intimacy; and elgin was largely to blame for that. he was impulsive, after all; but this was hardly the quickest he'd fallen into bed with someone. it was barely a matter of seconds after anders had removed his jacket, and his tshirt, that the vampires hand found it's way back to his chest again; for the third time now. this time was different. he could have sworn he heard a soft, quiet hiss in the air as he pressed his chilled, paled hand against the dragonbloods heated, flushed chest. fire and ice. how poetic. how cliche.
"you're worried this might ruin a potential friendship between us?" he questioned with a lick of his lips as he let the fingers hooked beneath his chin tilt his head back a bit. "you're sweet too. why do i get the feeling your going to be a heartbreaker without even trying," he teased, his voice softened into a bit of a whisper as he looked up at the taller man; both hands now pressing flat against anders chest for a moment before he slowly started to slide them up until his arms were looped around the taller's neck. "i have a tendency to self sabotage, but you're fine anderson. anders. we can still be friends."
what is allowed. smiling at the innocence and sincerity of the question, elgin lifted himself up onto his toes and placed a soft kiss against anders cheek. "the only rule is you still have to show me your clothes after," he mused. "just enjoy yourself; act on impulse; desire. consider it just another part way of getting to know each other." he smirked again as his lips dragged against anders cheek until they were hovering over the dragonbloods own. "anything is allowed." elgin whispered before closing in and stealing a playful kiss.

The dragon blood watched Elgin undress, eyes flicking over the man with each movement. Glad the other was more comfortable now but also- glad he was perhaps less covered. Anders didn't know how to respond to the vampire being so quick to assert that he would in fact like a simple fuck without the effort of courting one another. Elgin putting a hand on his chest like that again, feeling his heated skin beneath the fabric, carefully he pulled off his own jacket, and t-shirt, setting them to the side as he closes in on the vampire in return.
"You are welcome to find out if you can stand the heat while beneath me if you want. Though I would not want this to sabatoge any continued friendship between us." Anders tipped two fingers under Elgin's chin, he was taller but between the two of the he was certainly the one less sure of himself in this situation. Here in the future what did this mean? "What are the rules of engagement here Elgin? What is allowed?" he breathed unsure of what he could and couldn't do, his warm hands already working their way over the vampire's chest and down his sides to hold onto his hips.
His haul of clothing forgotten in the heat of the moment between them.

nights like this made him painfully aware of how hard it was for him to sleep in a cold, empty bed. he was restless; he was anxious. in his restlessness he'd already unplugged every single electronic in his home in an attempt to drown out the annoying, subtle buzzing sound that they all emitted but it wasn't enough. he still couldn't sleep. so he wandered.
ambling through town, he still wasn't used to his new surroundings but he wasn't taking the time to memorize streets or get a lay of the land. he was just walking. doing anything he could to fill the time and hopes that, eventually, he would be tired.
much to his surprise, new haven wasn't completely asleep itself. making his way towards the glow of a store front that was still open, he stepped inside and glanced around at the shelves. he wasn't sure why a sports shop would need to be opened this late but he wasn't going to question it.

"you're open late," he mumbled as he lifted his head as his attention settled on the man behind the counter. "do you have..." he sighed, his words stretching out into a lazy drawl as he tried to come up with an excuse for himself to be there, "...any archery equipment?" he didn't agree with it but according to humans hunting was a sport so he didn't think it was too much of a stretch to ask for.

it was a pretty dull night in the store, well of course this specific shift used to be pretty empty, but it was already past midnight and not a single soul entered that place. River was sitting in a swivel chair, his feet were on the wooden counter as the vampire lazily filed his nails. however, upon seeing a figure entering, he instantly got up and went to the entrance.
