I messaged the band Emery on instagram today and they replied.

Since Rub Some Dirt on It came out I’ve listened to “Stranger” religiously, I interpreted as someone with religious trauma or in an abusive relationship. It’s such a powerful song, so I really wanted to know the actual meaning and to be honest I do regret asking, because hearing it now you can definitely tell and I can’t help but cry because it’s such an emotional and powerful song that it hurts even more to know how personal it is.
