We need to talk about the extremely unhealthy dieting and disordered eating that takes place among idols in the k-pop industry. I'll keep this conversation below the cut, because I know it can be triggering.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: extreme dieting, unhealthy eating, eating disorders, body image issues

Please understand what I address here is not meant to target or point fingers at any one particular idol, because this is an issue that's rampant throughout this industry and many others. Yes, I'm focusing on Bangtan in this post, but that's because they are the group I support and follow more than any other group.

I haven't had a chance to watch the Butter live until today when I saw that Jungkook made some concerning comments about how he dieted before and during the music video shoot. If you haven't watched the live, I'm providing some screenshots here.

Jungkook openly admits to not eating for five days. For FIVE DAYS, he only drank water. This is not okay. This is not normal. This is not healthy. Even more concerning, he talked about this on a livestream with over 17 million viewers.

We know extreme dieting and disordered eating happens. We know Bangtan's members participate in extreme dieting and disordered eating. This is not something only happening in the k-pop industry. The diet industry is a multi-billion dollar a year industry for a reason.

That being said, I am disappointed in Bangtan. Time and time again, they promote an agenda of loving yourself. It's one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with them. They encourage their fans to love themselves the way they are. To see Jungkook openly admit to starving himself like it's a completely normal thing is upsetting to say the least. To watch the other members just nod along to him saying this like it's no big deal is just as upsetting.

We know Bangtan holds an immeasurable amount of influence on their fans. Think about how quickly clothing and products sell out when a BTS member wears or uses them in public. Now, think about how someone who is unhappy with their body or their weight might hear Jungkook say he only drank water for five days and decide they'll do the same. Can you imagine the repercussions this kind of statement could have?

It took me a decade of yo-yo diets and horrible eating habits to realize what I was doing to myself was never going to solve my weight problem. Many people spend their whole lives struggling with dieting and eating disorders. I need people with huge amounts of influence on young minds (like the majority of idols and celebrities) to understand how much their words about extreme diets can impact those minds.

I also want to put some responsibility on k-pop fans (myself included). We talk a lot about our favorite idols' bodies. A LOT. We need to do better. We need to recognize that chiseled jaw or a defined waist is not the only thing that makes a person worthy of love. I know many of us love our favorite idols for more than just their looks. However, it wouldn't hurt to reflect on whether or not you'd love them as much if they were heavier.

There are no shortage of instances where an idol is immediately called out in the media and on socials when there's even a hint of weight gain. Think about how your comments on a idol's weight gain would be taken if you said them directly to that idol. More importantly, think about what your comments about weight sound like to your friends and family who are struggling with their own body insecurities.

I have so many more thoughts about this issue. It's impossible for me to include them all here, but I can't sit silently about such an important issue. Also, if you disagree with me, please don't send me hate. I will delete any and all hate I get over this post.
