The contrast between Paula and Russel is so great. Paula is so self-aware of her problem to the point of self-indulgence. She is the “divorced lady” and everyone is going to know about it and it’s going to be their problem too. Russel on the other hand is so in denial and keeps it shoved deep down that Paul’s pointing it out to him that he’s the “lonely guy” immediately causes him to spiral. It also makes sense why he’s been so attentive to Paula. It’s so he can keep avoiding his own issues.
