Free! Winged AU
(I can’t believe I’m finally posting about this) (*Sweats nervously*)
I've had this idea bouncing around in my head for a while now. (For a few years actually.) I've always wanted a Free! Winged au because most of the Free! Fantasy AU's I see are mermaid AU's or kingdom AU's or whatever. I've only found, like 3??? Winged AU's on ao3 (one of them being BEAUTIFULLY written. I'll link to all of them at the bottom. Check 'em out!) But none of them had what I was looking for.
So! Here begins, what I assume, will be the first of many Free! Winged au posts on this blog. Which is why we should start with what characters have what type of wings.
(Note: Google said an average adult male would need a 6.7 meter (about 22-ish foot) wingspan to fly, nevermind the wings being too heavy to flap anyway. But this is fantasy, so anything goes! :)
Let's start with an obvious one:
Nagisa Hazuki
Wing type: Ruby-throated Hummingbird (obviously)
Wingspan: 6 feet??? (I don't know wingspans man...) One wing is 3 feet.
*hovers while talking to people*
likes to show off his ability to fly backwards and upside-down (you know he would)
Someone equally as obvious:
Rei Ryugazaki
Wing type: Peacock (or Indian Peafowl if you want to get technical)
Wingspan: 8 feet. One wing is 4 feet (simple math)
*tail train gets in the way*
Bows in the most extravagant way possible
*gets on one knee* *tail fanned out* *wings extended behind him* *wing tips kissing the ground*
Is absolutely devastated when molting season comes around
Alright, number 3:
Haruka Nanase
Wing type: Great Blue Heron
Wingspan: 12 feet. One wing is 6 feet. (His wings are so huge because 8 feet for flying and then 4 extra feet because of his wing type. Herons generally have large wings, y'know?)
His wings are naturally water resistant so he can swim!
Is actually not a fan of flying. Thinks it’s too much work
Will flap his wings underwater. He basically doesn't have to use his legs
Lol, who am I kidding, that wouldn't work.
Probably...
Next, the person who is closest to Haru:
Kisumi Shigino (you thought it was Makoto, didn't you? You FOOLS!)
Wing type: Flamingo (I mean, c'mon. Look at him.)
Wingspan: 9 feet. One wing is 4'6
SHRIMP. Is a huge fan of seafood. Especially SHRIMP (Gotta keep those wings pink and healthy!)
Spends half an hour cleaning his feathers in the morning
Does the flamingo “Leg Thing” when he’s asleep
Alright, alright, the real person connected at the hip with Haru:
Makoto Tachibana
Wing type: Dove (one of those white ones who are actually domestic rock doves)
Wingspan: 5'9 on the left one and 6'6 on the right which equates to 12'2 (though he should have a wingspan of 13 feet, considering his size. So, he can't fly)
Has a tendency to "hide in his wings" where he'll bring them up and around his shoulders to hide his face.
Usually keeps them folded neatly against his back, hates drawing attention to them
When he’s scared/surprised, his wings flare out (as you might imagine)
While he knows nothing ever changes, he secretly wishes his feathers will grow bigger when molting season rolls around.
And... That's about it!

I finally got around to drawing a visual representation of the Free! Boys for my Winged! Au. (These are old sketches that I meant to post earlier)
KEEP IN MIND: *wings not proportionate to bodies. Sketch book was of insufficient length*
Later on, I might make a post with the birds that have each character's wing type and label which character has which wings. *Also, forgot to draw Makoto, Rei and Sousuke, so I'll do that in a later post as well* 😅

Imagine: Living with Haruka Nanase
I had a lot going on for the last two weeks: I moved to another apartment, found and internship, and investigated the source of my headaches and eye soreness. This week it was hard to... hm... let's say to be a viewing human being. My eyes hurt from looking at screens and I mostly avoided them. Hopefully, the glasses will be ready by next week and save me! Anyway, it's June after all and I usually re-watch Free!! during this time. Therefore, I have inspiration to write about the most precious water boys! Let's start with the lovely dolphin...
☀️ Haruka prefers to wake up early, so he can enjoy the calmness and start the day slowly. He can lay for some time, admiring your cute face with the first rays of sun. If you are an early bird as well, he will be glad to have a company. Moreover, you will have a chance to take a relaxing bath together!
🍳 Nanase is quite skilled in cooking. After you decided to live together, he started to learn new recipes, just so he can make a surprise for you in the morning or after the hard day. The cooking schedule is constantly negotiated based on the timetables and willingness to cook. Otherwise, you can always order something or pick at the restaurant.
Bonus: Yes, you will try all types of fish dishes, it is not negotiated.
🧹 Haruka knows how to keep the place tidy. He prefers to keep it clean from the start and always cleans up after himself. However, he never complains if you do not clean after yourself straight away. Sometimes you can be low on energy after an especially tiring day and Haruka is ready to help you or will step away and allow you to do everything in your own space. The main things in your relationships are calmness and mutual care.
🧺 From all the water activities, Haruka the least a fan of laundry. Yes, nowadays, it is easy to start a program on the machine. No, he is overwhelmed with different detergents, softeners, whiteners and this strangely smelling thing! If you know how to do this complicated task, Haru will volunteer to do any other work. If not, you can always ask Makoto to come over, because he knows everything about... anything!
🛒 When it comes to grocery shopping, you can always rely on him for making a checklist. Nanase usually remembers about all different products that you lack in fridge or pantry and will also add snacks and additional products for new dishes. While you are usually in budget, he will prefer to go cheap on beans and rice but take the freshest fish and fruits. In summer, he always brings a watermelon after the training, so you can enjoy it and cool down after a hot day.
🛋 While staying at home, Haruka is always chill and relaxed. He can enjoy long bathes, while offering you to join or read a book laying on the sofa. If you do some handcraft like knitting or sewing, he will lay his head on your lap. Sometimes he trains at home or turns on the music and invites you for a small dancing party!
🌙 At night he usually sleeps deep and cannot be bothered by the noises around. Haruka likes when you lay close to him or hug his forearm, so he can feel your warmness. Your nights are always calm, and sometimes you might think that Nanase protects your dreams...
Coffee Compatability (Part I)
Haruka Nanase & Latte
He prefers this simple and soft drink as his go-to, especially on days when he is out in the city or Makoto takes him somewhere. Important to mention that he is not a frequent coffee drinker and does not need it on daily basis to stay awake.
Bonus details: almond milk, vanilla syrup, no sugar.
Makoto Tachibana & Cappucino
Since he was 15, Tachibana got used to drinking coffee in the morning. Not only to stay awake but also to enjoy the delicate taste of the drink. With time he learned to make it himself (with a strict guidance of his mother). Makoto is usually the one who controls coffee intake of Rin and Ray.
Bonus details: oat milk, extra cinnamon, one tsp of sugar, small fishes on frosting.
Nagisa Hazuki & Frappe
Lots of whipped cream, syrups, and sugar - he lives for the taste of this terrific drink and will do everything to obtain it. There is no size rather than venti when it comes to the frappe. However, with the energy that Hazuki uses on daily basis, no one is worried that this much of sugar will harm him. At the end of the day, Nagisa only has an opportunity to grab something like that when they go shopping.
Bonus details: extra wiped cream, extra raspberry syrup, extra ice.
Rei Ryugazaki & Espresso
Productivity and excellence have their own implications. In case of Rei, strong brewed coffee is a way to stay awake and complete all the tasks on time. However, he was ones caught by Makoto after four shots of espresso and was put on count for daily intake.
Bonus details: extra water all day long!
Rin Matsuoka & Black Coffee
After living in Australia he got used to drinking coffee as it is. No sugar, no milk, no other add-ins to sweeten things up. He takes life as it is, so there is no compromise for coffee. However, Rin started to add some sugar to his coffee eventually... but let's allow him to keep cool.
Bonus details: a tiny bit of caramel syrup.
Gou Matsuoka & Matcha Latte
She does not really like the taste of coffee and decided to switch to something that has the same coffein levels but tastier. Matcha latte has become one of her best friends and the reason why the morning is so beautiful. Apart from enjoying the tea itself, she likes the meditating process of whipping matcha tea and then combining it with the milk.
Bonus details: agave syrup.
