I will never stop preaching about the importance of the arts in today's world.

Art is expression / documentation of emotion and experiences. This could be through any medium that you could possibly think of.

We are spending millions, engineering software that attempts to recreate what humans can create for free with our brains.

I am so fucking fed up of people telling me that unless I pursue further education within Law/Medicine/STEM/etc, that it's worthless, there are so many critical parts of everyday life that can only be upheld through the study/creation of art. Yes, the furthering of AI scares many artists. Yes, AI aims to create new art.... Based off of pre-existing art created by actual people.

So even to perpetuate that cycle of creating ai art , new art needs to be fed into it's databases.

You can preach that I should take maths till the end of my highschool education , you can tell me that art/music will get me nowhere.

But everything we consume contains some sort of design process - architecture, interior design, clothing , package design , app/ web design.

The rate we consume television and media requires a constant stream of people who work in the performing arts , not just the actors.

New music we wish to come from our already popular, favourite artists will require people who work in the arts as well such as session musicians , producers , writers , etc -

People who are paid well to work in the arts.

-

The misconception that being an artist of any kind is not a "real job" is obviously demeaning but discourages younger people from pursuing vital careers we need to thrive. I'm sick of people - especially many of the older generation claiming that the youth of today just don't want to work real jobs/work hard (which is a different conversation ) - the jobs within the arts are real jobs. Jobs that pay and jobs that can be 10× less miserable for some than a STEM based job. People are needed in the arts. Let your kid express themselves through the arts and if they want to go into a career within that - then good , they can do something they are passionate about and encourage others to find the same joy they did.

Sod off and let people become artists, poets and much more

Why Capitalism Needs Infinite Growth to Survive

Or, 'Even The Goddamn Money Is Privately Owned '

So, you know how capitalism apologists always say that we need a high growth rate in order to ensure high standards of living? Didja ever notice how they don't actually give a shit and a half about the magnitude of resources people are able to access, only that the rate of change is positive? There's a structural reason for that. It's a dogshit one, but like, it's pretty influential.

It starts with Fractional Reserve Banking. Been around for a while, basically ever since paper money was invented. When a bank takes a savings deposit, it can lend most of that deposit back out to someone else. The person who takes out the loan will spend the money on something, and the person who receives the money will put it in their savings account, and the cycle repeats.

Why Capitalism Needs Infinite Growth To Survive

The reserve requirement in the US is 10%, which means that through this multiplier effect, the commercial banking system can expand the money supply printed by the government by up to a factor of 10x. In other words, ~90% of the money in circulation is privately owned, and crucially, it carries interest.

So, almost every dollar out there needs to get paid back to a lender, with some extra dollars sprinkled on top (as a treat). This is only possible if there is always more money in the future than there is in the present, in order to make up the missing difference.

This means capitalism is always operating in some mixture of three states:

1. The increased flow of money is spent on an increased flow of stuff, which is growth.

2. The increased flow of money is spent on the same amount of stuff, which is inflation.

3. The flow of money does not increase, so the loans cannot be repaid, so the banks crash and pull the plug on the money printer and now nobody has permission to do anything anymore and the entire system crashes and everything is terrible but it can probably be fixed with austerity guys, I promise, just one more public service cut, it'll fix everything this time, trust me bro

The State can come in and print a whole bunch of money to shift the economy from situation 3 to situation 2, but you can't print more resources. That requires pulling a bunch of energy and materials out of the ground. And so they pillage the Earth, and they lie about trying to cut back in the future, and they greenlight new fossil projects, and they pillage even faster, and they profit.

Capitalism can often feel insurmountable, but part of that is because, ever since World War 2, there have been easily extractable deposits of petroleum that have let the system constantly accelerate to insane levels of material throughput. That won't last forever. Fossil fuels and mineral deposits get harder to extract as time goes on. And every time the extraction system has even the slightest hiccup, capitalism reveals itself to be as fragile as a shark, choking to death as soon as it stops swimming.

I once ended up at a dinner with a bunch of business and economics majors from all over the world. Conversation flowed, as it does in a group of optimistic grad students, about world politics and economies.

At some point, a person from Venezuela went on to say "I don't care if the next leader in my country is genocidal, I only wish them to be economically efficient." He said it semi-seriously, and I politely giggled, even though it wasn't a great joke in my opinion. But what did I know, I'm a math major, maybe I just don't "get" econ jokes. Nobody reacted too much and life moved on.

As I look at the news of the Israeli war, and the support by the western world, I realise that wasn't as much of a joke as I thought. People, whole countries, think that this would be better. Life moving on as "normal" for the economy, even if meant a some people dying, some children killed, some cultures erased.

"For the Greater Good", though for whose greatness and whose good, we don't know.
