My dad has bees. Today, I went to his house and he showed me all the honey he had gotten from the hives. He took the lid off a 5-gallon bucket full of honey and on top of the honey there were 3 little bees, struggling. They were covered in sticky honey and drowning. I asked him if we could help them and he said he was sure they wouldn't survive. Casualties of honey collection I suppose.

I asked him again if we could at least get them out and kill them quickly, after all he was the one who taught me to put a suffering animal (or bug) out of its misery. He finally conceded and scooped the bees out of the bucket. He put them in an empty Chobani yogurt container and put the plastic container outside.

Because he had disrupted the hive with the earlier honey collection, there were bees flying all over outside.

We put the 3 little bees in the container on a bench and left them to their fate. My dad called me out a little while later to show me what was happening. These three little bees were surrounded by all their sisters (all of the bees are females) and they were cleaning the sticky nearly dead bees, helping them to get all of the honey off of their bodies. We came back a short time later and there was only one little bee left in the container. She was still being tended to by her sisters.

When it was time for me to leave, we checked one last time and all three of the bees had been cleaned off enough to fly away and the container was empty.

Those three little bees lived because they were surrounded by family and friends who would not give up on them, family and friends who refused to let them drown in their own stickiness and resolved to help until the last little bee could be set free.

Bee Sisters. Bee Peers. Bee Teammates.

We could all learn a thing or two from these bees.

Bee kind always.

"it's concerning if university students are genuinely struggling to read full adult-level books for class" and "don't overstate the reporting of a single news article" and "if this shift is genuinely real, it's reflective of broad curriculum changes in lower education levels, probably at least in part due to remote schooling during COVID, and doesn't mean the new generation is being willfully Stupid and Vapid" and "when reading for personal pleasure people should read whatever they like without shame" and "reading from a broad variety of genres, styles, and authorial backgrounds will improve your understanding of both literature and the real world" and "actively mocking people for their tastes in books does not encourage them to become more adventurous you're just being mean" and also "but seriously adult books are not just boringly pretentious nothingburgers padded with pointless sex scenes, and claiming they are just shows how little you've read" all can and should co-exist.

The way people demonize seagulls is actually unreal. Almost all of their natural habitat has been destroyed (almost all coastal areas have been developed, destroying natural sand dune ecosystems) and they're doing their best to adapt. They're literally just trying to survive. You're in their home. The vitriol some people have for these gorgeous sea birds just because they're not shy about snatching food if you're not cautious is insane

Listen my dudes Ancient Egypt existed for a really fuckass long time. Literally just Pharaonic civilization lasted 3,000 years. That’s not even including predynastic civilization and Roman rule. If you lump that in you’re looking at more like… 5,000 years. Like. If you want a comparison of how long that is: THE YEAR IS CURRENTLY 2018. TWO THOUSAND. TWO-THIRDS OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN PHARAONIC CIVILIZATION HAVE HAPPENED SINCE THE ‘BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST’ We comparatively just entered the Third Intermediate Period. The Greeks will not take over for another 700~ years. Cleopatra will not be born until the year 2931.

It’s a really long time guys.

In fairness to King Kong, if I had a tiny adorable primate in my hand I would also be very resistant to someone taking it away from me.

As an ndn I find a little joy in being just a little bit of a hater about cowboys. Like not really. It's not that serious. But every so often I want to start talking about historical context & make everybody uncomfortable. Like when somebody's a little too into pirate shows yknow

"Ohhh why is high fashion so ugly why is runway fashion so ugly who on earth could possibly want this" its sculpture. High fashion isn't meant to be worn anywhere it's just people-based sculpture. It's okay

I wish everyone harassing random people (esp Jews) on the internet about Palestine a very have you actually done anything to help? Have you donated anything? Have you signed petitions or called lawmakers? Have you attended protests? Have you taken any tangible actions to support and aid Palestine?

Obviously I understand if there are things you aren't in a position to be able to do, but that doesn't mean you should harass people just to feel like you're doing something. That's still not helping anyone in Palestine at all.

People always talk about going to the city for an education but you can’t learn shit in the city. I’m talking to these mother fuckers and they know absolutely nothing about spontaneous combustion due to improper hay storage. They don’t know how to outrun an alligator. No life skills whatsoever.

why is "mummies are so rare bc the british ate them" always presented as like a morbid fun fact and not an example of heinous racism and dehumanization of people of colour to the point of cannibalism. a little bit odd if im honest.

Video games sometimes give characters alternative cold-weather outfits for the obligatory ice physics bits as a nod to verisimilitude, but you know what I'd like to see and never do? Rain gear. Practically every game with weather effects has an area where it's always raining buckets – show me what your shouty elf twink's raincoat looks like.

love that regis was resentful of cahir for being nilfgaardian at first. he didn’t even know anything about what he did to ciri or that geralt even hated him, he was just old enough and wise enough to disrespect the empire and military. “i can excuse drinking human blood but i draw the line at acts of imperialist aggression.”

i like this because a lot of interpretations of regis’ character (… blood and wine dlc 🥴) set him apart from society as an external judge of human folly and foolishness. like hmmmm… you mourtæls…. 🧐🍷 so dividèd by youer prejudicês…

and don’t get me wrong, regis is indeed the “let’s all kumbaya” type, but something as simple and subtle as his little snide remark about cahir’s surname and almost undetectable accent when he meets him betrays his absolute integration with northern society and strong ties to life in dillingen, and his inner prejudices resulting from that, which are absolutely. say it with me. human

Jfc so many TikTok dog trainers push this idea that giving your dog attention when they ask for it, getting excited when you come home and letting your dog sleep in you bed causes separation anxiety.

It doesn’t. Research has shown that separation anxiety are caused by factors like genetics, trauma, sudden environmental changes, moving house and other usually completely out of control factors.

Your dog is a goddamn social animal. Social sleeping is natural behaviour, big excited greetings is natural behaviour and seeking social support and interaction is NATURAL BEHAVIOUR. Because you have brought a social living breathing animal into your house and you are their social group.

Withholding attention and being unpredictable or conditional about interacting with a social animal makes you kind of an asshole. Sure, you should set boundaries and your dog doesn’t have to live in your skin either, but don’t let unqualified so-called “professionals” shame you for loving your dog how you choose to love them.

Let them sleep in your bed if you want them to, revel in the joy of an excited dog greeting you when you come home, give your dog pats and cuddles when they seek you for them.

And don’t let anyone tell you that giving social support to a social animal is going to cause them anxiety. Because that is not how anxiety works at all.

I'm an educator practically by birth. I was constantly ignored by most people until I was a teenager, but I had so many exciting things to share I felt ready to burst. Every time I learned something new I was so excited I needed other people to be excited too. I have a compulsive need to explain and to teach because learning is wonderful and I love seeing other people light up with realization too. I have had so many students who have been engaging with me and enjoyed it. I have had so many wonderful interactions online and in museums with the people I've had a chance to meet. Education is important and learning is something humans fundamentally love, I firmly believe that.

but it also means I've engaged a lot with people who don't want to learn, who just want to be right, or who just want a good grade, or what have you. the reasons are diverse and not always the individual's fault. but it reflects a culture that fundamentally prioritizes one's pride over the humility that is necessary for learning and we keep seeing this explode online.

I wish I had an answer. but so much of it is tied to fundamental flaws of the human species - our negative cognitive bias, our ability to find patterns where they don't actually exist, our anthropocentrism, the fact that we descend from prey animals that became predators so they have the ability to destroy with the anxiety of the destroyed - that I don't know if there's an answer.

I just know that if people approached learning with humility, curiosity, and excitement - and an open mind - things might not be this bad.

No offense but I think some of you would be a lot happier writing a fictional atlas or encyclopedia instead of a narrative story
