"Shit," James mumbled, fumbling with his fork for the fifth time that evening, blushing scarlet and trying not to allow the negative thoughts in his head to overtake him.

Usually, he was the epitome of smooth-talking. Confident and sure of himself. For weeks, he'd been flirting, throwing pickup lines, doing everything he could to pull a laugh or a scandalized reaction, just to see that beautiful face turn to him. But for some reason, now that they were finally here, now that he'd finally gotten this date, he couldn't help but feel overwhelmingly nervous.

Grey eyes bore into his soul from across the table, the quiet Slytherin just staring at him with an unreadable expression as he mumbled to himself and tried to regain his composure.

Then, for the first time in quite a few minutes, Regulus initiated conversation. "Potter," he said, a tone of wonder in his voice, "are you nervous?"

James blushed deeper and chuckled, shrugging. "S'pose I am."

And, wondrously, a cool, pale, thin hand reached across the table to grab his shaking one, anchoring him to reality. "James...I wouldn't have agreed to come here with you if I didn't...I mean..." Regulus sighed, twisting his perfect lips in frustration as he tried to find the words for his emotions. "You don't need to be anxious. I'm not sure how, but you've already made quite the impression. I'm not going to suddenly change my mind. Just...be your obnoxious self, alright?"

Heart fluttering, James grinned, gripping Regulus's hand. "Reggie, if you were a fruit, you'd be a fine-apple."

Snorting in disgust, Regulus rolled his eyes. "That's more like it."

"Oh....my God," Regulus whispered, a shit-eating grin covering his entire face.

"What?" James asked, blinking, trying to control his racing heart.

"You're jealous!" Regulus gasped, chuckling as he gazed at his roommate.

They'd been discussing Regulus's latest fling over breakfast, a box of sugary cereal between them. James had been harping on about how he was not a fan of Regulus and Barty Crouch Jr. continuing on with their 'friends with benefits' arrangement. It was, as he said, not good enough for Regulus. Crouch obviously was using him and Regulus could do much better.

But now, with Regulus pointing his spoon accusatorily at James, he found himself nervous, like the spoon was a weapon. "I'm not jealous," he mumbled, furrowing his eyebrows.

"You are!" Regulus taunted, crossing his arms. "You're mad Barty and I are fucking? What are you going to do about it, hmm?"

And suddenly, every emotion James felt when Regulus brought Barty back to his room magnified. The anger and frustration and yes, jealousy, because Crouch wasn't good enough for Regulus. James was good enough for Regulus.

If Regulus wanted him to do something about it, then who was he to say no?

So he lunged across their little table, grasping the back of Regulus's neck, claiming his lips in a heated kiss, trying to put all of his pent-up need and emotions into the way his lips moved against the other man's.

And thankfully, Regulus responded, whining softly, opening his mouth instantly, allowing James to kiss him like they wouldn't survive the morning.

But as he pulled back, Regulus bit his lip, murmuring, "I...I thought you were jealous because you wanted Barty."

James blinked, terrified for one awful moment that he'd messed up.

"I'm glad you didn't," Regulus finished, pulling him forward again.

"James," Regulus admonished sternly, but a smile flickered at the corner of his lips, "where have you hidden my trousers?"

Laying on his bed, bare chest uncovered by blankets and smile making his entire face light up, James shrugged. "I don't remember the trousers to which you're referring."

"The trousers I wore to come to your flat!" Regulus hissed, but he choked back a laugh. "I have to go, James, or Barty and Evan will wonder why I'm not home!"

"Well. It seems like you're in quite the predicament, then," James said seriously, one hand coming to circle around Regulus's thin wrist. "Maybe you should just give up and come back to bed?"

It was tempting. So tempting. But he had an exam in the morning and two nosy roommates. And, of course, he'd already 'come back to bed' twice that evening. So, he slipped from James's grip, pecked him on the cheek, and grabbed a pair of folded joggers from nearby. "Don't expect to get these back!" he sang, slipping them over his hips and heading for the door.

"They look much better on you, anyway!" he heard James yell as he exited the apartment.

He couldn't stop grinning all the way home.
