Did Jaime have any other option of turning the tide of the battle? Could he have ordered a retreat?

When Jaime realises he's totally outmatched at Whispering Wood, he attempts to cut through the melee and slay Robb in single combat. Aside from being an utterly Jaime-esque thing to do, how sound a tactic is this in medieval battle? As ever, I love the blog and can't wait for new podcasts!

Sure. There’s plenty of examples of trying to force a quick victory by killing the enemy commander. The Battle of Bosworth Field is one, where Richard III tried to attack Henry Tudor in single combat to force his army to rout, though he was attacked from behind by Lord Stanley. Single combat ended with the advent of the infantry era and the pike square, but this did happen often enough not to be considered a one-off thing.

Thanks for the question, Anon.
