"There's no thought crimes and no thought heroisms" is honestly such a good piece of life advice.
You could be having the most fucked up problematic thoughts 24/7 but if you treat people with kindness, the good you do is the only thing that matters. But if you have only the purest thoughts and all the correct beliefs, it doesn't matter one bit if you spend most of your time being an asshole to people.
that's like, most of the fanfics I don't post (yet. who knows)
different characters, same thing
Nothing brings me joy more than simping ridiculously obnoxiously over "evil/bad/wrong/complex/villain" characters just because people can't understand the concept of enjoyment not being the same as condoning.
"How can you like Homelander?! He's a fascist racist murderer!"
Who?? My pookie? My Homie? Homelander?? He's my cinnamon son. Never done a thing wrong in his life.
"Billy Hargrove is an abusive racist who deserved to die!"
Billy Hargrove for President 2024. My BarbieBabygirl has never sinned since the day he was born. He crimed? Instant innocence. He's too pretty for jail.
The moment you try to shame or attack or harass me because I enjoy fictional evil little rat bastards I swear to god I will make promoting them my life mission.
Except Joffrey Lannister. Even in this den of sin we don't go that far. #justiceforthedirewolvesofhousestark
"shipping service" is an excellent word for this (I have done the same thing on occasion, it's always fun)
The cool thing about being pro ship is what I call "bonus ships." Ships that I am barely interested in, do nothing for me, hell, one of them makes me ask myself "why". But! My friends are into these ships. And even tho I'm not interested or invested, I will stumble across content and bring it right back to my friends. Saw a thing you like! Here you go. Maybe a song or a piece of art that reminded me of the thing, too.
This does nothing for me, but it works for your ship, so I brought it to you. Bonus ships. I just think it's a nice thing to do for your friends.
Me and my friends have a very similar set up. We both have a lot of interests that don't strictly overlap but because we share things so routinely we'll regularly see things that are more tailored toward the other person (yay for the internet spying on your every move!)
We call it the Shipping Service, pun intended.
can confirm that Azgaar is awesome
If you like to be able to visualize your world but don't want to draw a map by hand, I really enjoy fiddling with this to create my own original planet for my fantasy series!
You can either randomly-generate landmasses and names, or create your own completely custom ones! There's also a bunch of different filters and labeling options so you can completely customize everything you can imagine!
You have the option of saving your maps to your hardrive to back them up, and I highly reccomend doing so so you can always come back and keep updating it if you enjoy it :)
America has a weird relationship with cults where they’re terrified of small cults (or organizations they think are cults) but completely normalized massive cults that hurt many more people (eg: LDS Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Amish, Scientology, most Megachurches)

bingewatching will never come close to bingereading. there is nothing like blocking out the entire Earth for ten hours to read a book in one sitting no food no water no shower no bra and emerging at the end with no idea what time it is or where you are, a dried-up prune that's sensitive to light and loud noises because you've been in your room in the dark reading by the glow of a single LED. it's like coming back after a three-month vacation in another dimension and now you have to go downstairs and make dinner. absolutely transcendental
Sometimes when people on the Internet are like "ADULTS CAN NEVER INTERACT WITH MINORS IT'S CREEPY" I remember how, at 12, back in 1997, I was on the Witchvox forums with people ranging from me to people in at least their 50s, and no one there was ever a creep to me, no one ever made me feel uncomfortable or asked for my personal info, and when I finally broke down after a particularly brutal day of bullying at school and posted about it they were the first adults I'd ever met in my entire life who told me the bullies were the problem and it was okay to be angry about it.
Kids need to interact with adults who will listen to them.
one thing tumblr has unironically done to improve my mental health is completely rewrite how i view disgust as a concept. there is no higher compliment to me than being told i have something wrong with me and should be ashamed of myself when i'm just living my life in a way that is perhaps odd and hard to understand, but ultimately as harmless as you can get in our society. which probably wasn't the intention of all the advice i got in therapy to reframe my negative thought patterns as more positive ones, but it's doing great things for me.
My favorite thing to write about is taking a generic trope and *Actually Thinking About The Implications* if it were something in an Actual Society of living people.
yeeesssss that's my kinda worldbuilding
What's your favorite thing to write about?
I love fantasy and scifi!
One of the Big Works I'm planning on doing in the future is a big old series set on the same planet across multiple eras and stages of development, which starts off as your typical Fantasy setting, full of various species of people in a lower-technology era of settlements, kingdoms, and a few bigger cities in each region, up to steam technology, then "modern" equivalent, all the way up to space-faring times, etc.
One of my biggest issues with xenofiction (any fiction where the main character is Not Human, usually in fantasy settings but also scifi with Aliens) is that people come up with these really cool designs and concepts that are interesting, but they usually have some form of Biological Essentialism baked into them that is never actually addressed, or if it is, its ultimately dismissed as
"We evolved this [oppressive culture] eons ago, therefore we cannot [do not want to] change it ,and it is in fact *correct* and *natural* for our kind to be this way."
Like, as an example:
Say a fantasy series where there's cool fantasy animals inspired by hyenas with extremely rigid gender roles and abilities, where its matriarichal and the males of the species are commonly beaten up by the females who are asserting their dominance? Neat, I wonder what kind of role they play in the fantasy ecosystem!
But if you take those same hyena-inspired fantasy animals and make them a fantasy sentient species who are *People* and their behavior stays the same...
.. you do, in fact, have to actually put in the work to say that just because their ancient animal ancestors behaved in this way does not make it right or just for them to continue to beat down and oppress literally 50% of their population, and what kind of movements are going on either currently to change the status quo, or decide at what point in the past they mostly stopped such Explicit Behavior, while they perhaps continue it is more subtle ways, much like how misogyny, heteronormativity, and associativity are still widespread even in ""progressive"" countries.
TL;DR:
My favorite thing to write about is taking a generic trope and *Actually Thinking About The Implications* if it were something in an Actual Society of living people.
My other, less complicated favorite thing to write is I am planning on writing some (*cough cough* A LOT *cough cough*) original Arsène Lupin stories in the future once I have finished reading all of the books that are currently Public Domain in my country :D
If you are curious about Arsene Lupin, here is a link to the first book on Project Gutenberg, and here is a link to a fantastic audiobook on youtube made by Games and Gutenberg :)
aha, that's the acronym I've been looking for all these years
vilf (villain I'd like to fuck)
If you see this you’re legally obligated to reblog and tag with the book you’re currently reading
btw this isn't a vague/subtweet (post?) or anything but just so y'all know, there's a way to mark things as "inspired by" on ao3

you don't have to just put it in the notes!! very cool under-utilized feature
I play Dishonored for like 15min and suddenly it's 2am, wtf

tfw you build a whole complex universe for one very short novel you drafted nearly a decade ago without much worldbuilding at the time (and that had potential but was a total mess bc nanowrimo)
and you keep thinking like, "kind of a shame I only ever had this one story idea for this 'verse"
and then you read sth unrelated and suddenly a fucking lighbulb goes on in your dusty old braincase and you're like, "hey, wow, that could turn this into a proper, long novel"
followed by the second, horrifying realization that no, this will not become a "proper, long novel", this will become an entire fucking series
and part of you wants to scream bc you got like three other universes with plenty stories from shorts to trilogies waiting to be finished (or started), but on the other paw
on the other fucking paw, this 'verse will be worth all the effort building it now
(for those who follow my worldbuilding elsewhere, this is about Abyss, the homeverse of the voidbrood. I'm finally starting to figure out where I wanna go with this one. only took like nine years)
I'm in this picture and I don't even care anymore, that's what I pay all that money to my ISP for

"drawing is wild. you think you know what things look like aand then 5 minutes later you're googling 'bird'"
My art was made to uplift and inspire, to make people happy. Do not compare yourself to me, your art is important because you made it with love and care, no matter what it is. You may like my artstyle more, but don't think less of yourself. You're trying and, you put effort into it. Be prod of it, for yourself. There always will be someone better, drawing 'prettier' art. But that doesn't matter. If our ancestors haven't even tried, because maybe their neighbour would be better than them, we wouldn't have art at all. You matter, no matter how small the thing you make is, it matters, because no one else, but you could've made it, and here you are, looking at it, and it exists
Take care everyone
Ps: And there always is room for improvement, it's never too late, you have time to get where you want to be

Seven years after, I see you again 😚

Writing tips for long fics that helped me that no one asked for.
1.) Don't actually delete content from your WIP unless it is minor editing - instead cut it and put it in a secondary document. If you're omitting paragraphs of content, dialog, a whole scene you might find a better place for it later and having it readily available can really save time. Sometimes your idea was fantastic, but it just wasn't in the right spot.
2.) Stuck with wording the action? Just write the dialog then revisit it later.
3.) Stuck on the whole scene? Skip it and write the next one.
4.) Write on literally any other color than a white background. It just works. (I use black)
5.) If you have a beta, while they are beta-ing have them read your fic out loud. Yes, I know a lot of betas/writers do not have the luxury of face-timing or have the opportunity to do this due to time constraints etc but reading your fic out loud can catch some very awkward phrasing that otherwise might be missed. If you don't have a beta, you read it out loud to yourself. Throw some passion into your dialog, you might find a better way to word it if it sounds stuffy or weird.
6.) The moment you have an idea, write it down. If you don't have paper or a pen, EMAIL it to yourself or put it in a draft etc etc. I have sent myself dozens of ideas while laying down before sleep that I 10/10 forgot the next morning but had emailed them to myself and got to implement them.
7.) Remember - hits/likes/kudos/comments are not reflective of the quality of your fic or your ability to write. Most people just don't comment - even if they say they do, they don't, even if they preach all day about commenting, they don't, even if they are a very popular blog that passionately reminds people to comment - they don't comment (I know this personally). Even if your fic brought tears to their eyes and it haunted them for weeks and they printed it out and sent it to their friends they just don't comment. You just have to accept it. That being said - comment on the fic you're reading now, just do it, if you're 'shy' and that's why you don't comment the more you comment the better you'll get at it. Just do it.
8.) Remove unrealistic daily word count goals from your routine. I've seen people stress 1500 - 2000 words a day and if they don't reach that they feel like a failure and they get discouraged. This is ridiculous. Write when you can, but remove absurd goals. My average is 500 words a day in combination with a 40 hour a week job and I have written over 200k words from 2022-2023.
9.) There are dozens of ways to do an outline from precise analytical deconstruction that goes scene by scene to the minimalist bullet point list - it doesn't matter which one you use just have some sort of direction. A partial outline is better than no outline.
10.) Write for yourself, not for others. Write the fic you know no one is going to read. Write the fic that sounds ridiculous. You will be so happy you put it out in the world and there will be people who will be glad it exists.
