[ARTICLE] The story behind BTS Suga donating Korean beef to 39 orphanages for birthday

Suga, member of boygroup BTS (RM, Jin, Suga, J-hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook) did special good deeds on the occasion of his birthday.

Suga received congratulations for his 26th on March 9th from numerous fans all over the world. During this, posts sharing that Suga sent 10kg of grade 1++ Korean beef (Hanwoo) with inspection certificate included along with signed BTS albums to several orphanages went viral online.

Regarding this, a Bighit Entertainment official shared with Newsen “Suga donated Korean beef to 39 orphanages for his birthday under the name of BTS fanclub ‘ARMY’.”

The story went back to 4 years ago. During a fansign in 2014, Suga talked with fans and said “I’ll buy you meat once I make a lot of money.” It’s said that Suga didn’t forget his promise with fans and used this occasion of his 26th birthday to make a meaningful donation together with his fans.”

Bighit official said, “Suga can’t hold a meat party with his fans so to express his gratitude for fans, he donated not under his own name, but under the name of ARMY.”

Recently, BTS members have been consistently doing good deeds and showing an example. Earlier, Jimin gifted signed BTS albums to his junior students at his old school Hoedong Elementary school, located at Geumjung District, Busan, in the school’s last graduation ceremony. He also gifted uniforms to graduates who are about to enter middle school this year. Hoedong Elementary school, which was opened in 1982, ended its 36-year-long history and was closed. Jimin’s father attended the graduation ceremony, delivered the gifts and also read the congratulation speech. BTS reps explained, “We heard that (Jimin’s) father felt Hoedong Elementary School’s closing was unfortunate and did good deeds.” They also constantly do good deeds as a group. Before the release of “WINGS: You Never Walk Alone’ last February, they donated 100 million won (~$93,000) to the union of 416 families of the victims from Sewol Ferry tragedy. Each of 7 members donated 10 million won and their agency donated 30 million won, donating 100 million won in total. The members personally made the decision and quietly sent the donation to union of 416 families, which the media belatedly reported later. They’re also doing long-term good deeds with their music. Since last November, BTS and Bighit Entertainment have been aiding a 2-year-long UNICEF’s campaign to eradicate violence towards children and teenagers in the world in partnership with the Korean Committee for UNICEF. This campaign is developed from the social changing ‘LOVE MYSELF’ campaign that BTS has been preparing for the past time and UNICEF’s global campaign ‘#ENDviolence’ for eradicating violence towards children and teenagers. BTS and Bighit Entertainment established ‘LOVE MYSELF’ fund as the start of this agreement and donated 500 million won (~$470,000) to the Korean Committee of UNICEF. 3% of album sales profit from ‘LOVE YOURSELF’ series, which will last 2 years, entire profit of official campaign goods, funding from public donation will consistently be used to support ‘#ENDviolence’ campaign. On January 17th, the total donation has surpassed 600 million won (~$564,000). in the future, 3% of album sales profit and profit from official campaign goods, which went on sale last December, will be additionally donated. As of February 13th (local time), BTS’ mini album ‘LOVE YOURSELF 承: Her’, released on September 18th last year, has been charting on Billboard main album chart ‘Billboard 200′ for 18 consecutive weeks. The album’s accumulative sales recorded 1,613,924 copies in sales according to Korean music chart Gaon Chart, setting the new record of highest sales in the history for both Gaon Chart and BTS.

Last February 28th, BTS was awarded ‘Musician of The Year’ at Korean Music Awards held at Arts Theater, Guro Art Valley, Guro District, Seoul. BTS is currently focusing on making the new album and preparing for a comeback.
