the thing about youtube’s engagement algorithms is that they will always recommend videos that are a slightly more extreme version of the thing you are presently watching, so if you watch videos about, say, vegetarianism, youtube will begin to recommend videos on veganism and animal rights. and where this becomes a major, world-ruining problem is that if you watch a video about republican politicians, the recommendations will gradually slide further and further right until youtube is recommending you videos on nazism and holocaust denial. but also i am watching a video with the words “easy breezy yoga” in the title and all the recommended videos in the sidebar are like, “RUNNING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS” “FIFTEEN YOGA POSES THAT’LL MAKE YOUR STOMACH FLAT” “GET RID OF LOOSE FLABBY SKIN” like very purposefully nudging me away from gentle, low-effort yoga videos that i use to minimize anxiety and pushing me toward taking up running and exercising to lose weight… fucked up
