Not completely sure if this is it, but it seems like Fitzgerald's wife betrayed him. He said that even after he used up all of his fortune, his $500,000 worth wedding ring remained but it suddenly disappeared. One of the reason he fell into depression may be because, once his wife found out that they have no fortune left, she used (or sold) the wedding ring. That may have saved Fitzgerald, but it also meant that the $500,000 ring that he made sure not to use up during the fight was used up by his wife.

Anyway, I'm just making a simulation in my head where Fitzgerald's wife was shopping or something and all the credit cards got declined so she had to use the wedding ring that remained.

This is an analysis but I'm not very certain of it. Idk if I should feel happy that the wife saved Fitzgerald or sad for him cuz his wife used up the money off of their wedding ring, which was Fitzgerald's last asset

i guess i have mixed feelings towards him? this is coming from someone who has yet to read the gaiden manga or the dark era light novel, so i can't really grasp his character very well beyond someone deeply tied down to his own work that he is willing to sacrifice anyone, cross lines and anything under the sun to fulfill his goals. essentially an admirably dangerous man.

it does make me wonder why he's like that though? like, everytime i think of him, i remember the time i reread a bit of the manga and caught up to the part where he was about to shoot lucy and kyouka so as to not waste anymore time straying away from important matters. like, it's interesting that despite his composed and almost rigid appearance (based on his actions, not appearance), he so easily adapts or withdraws like an unwavering pool. like. why is he like that. he clearly got a long backlog of experience of having to do this so why.
