Happy Fanfic friday! Today's fic is a gem, full of silliness and heartfelt earnest love.
Comedy of Errors by Priscellie
Rated Teen, 21,000 words, Shakadolin and Rlainarin, post-RoW, canon divergent
Renarin goes to his brother to ask for advice courting Rlain, but because he’s so cagey with details, Adolin gets the impression he’s interested in Kaladin instead. Misunderstandings snowball like an avalanche in the Horneater Peaks. Hilarity ensues!
Teen-rated excerpt below the cut!
He watched as Rlain pushed up his sleeve and rotated his forearm to watch the light dance along its surface, humming to a reverent rhythm, and a sudden curiosity burned in Renarin’s guts. Would his skin be one even temperature, or would the glowing lines of red be slightly cooler than the black? If he ran a hand along the unarmored underside of one of Rlain’s forearms, would the sculpted planes of muscle be a rhythm of warm and cool?
He banished the thought immediately, channeling that urge into frantically twiddling the box in his pocket. He’d seen total strangers in markets and corridors grabbing at Rlain’s armor like he was a specimen in a traveling menagerie: an object of curiosity, Dalinar Kholin’s pet voidbringer. Renarin didn’t want to tread anywhere near those particular wounds. Which complicated his desire to climb the man like a tree.
“You’ve tried healing yourself?” Renarin asked, because he needed to say something.
Rlain hummed an affirmative.
“Have you tried anything else?”
Rlain hesitated. “After everything they’ve been through, I don’t think the people of this tower want to see another singer experimenting with the surges,” he said, his tone wry.
“Good thing I’m not most people.”
Rlain met his eyes again, for only a breath. There was warmth in his voice as he confirmed, “Good thing.”

When You're With Me, I Can Soar
Happy femslash February! I squeaked one in at the last minute (in my timezone at least)
Rated Teen, 3000 words, RoW, Lyn/Laran
Safe for work excerpt below the cut
Laran sat down directly beside her, so close that their hips touched. “They’ll give you a spoon if you ask nicely,” she teased.
“Shuddup,” Lyn mouthed around her food. She bumped Laran with her elbow and jutted her chin towards Rlain, who was in the middle of teaching some new recruits about listener customs. He made a habit of educating, hoping to spread tolerance and understanding. Lyn admired it. Besides, this morning he was talking about taking forms, and she loved to see people squirm when he taught them about mateform.
“Mateform's heat can be intense, and mates have eyes for just each other,” he was saying. "Cold and dripping from the rain, are good excuses to undress…" Suddenly Lyn was picturing Laran, soaked to the bone from highstorm rains, with all her attention focused solely on Lyn. She fumbled her bowl, and Rlain glanced at her.
“Oh! I am sorry there, Lyn. I can change what I'm talking about,” he said, changing to a gentle, singsong rhythm. “I don’t want to reopen a wound.”
Little did they know Lyn wasn't the one with the wound. “No, it’s okay, Rlain! Go ahead! I’m enjoying your lesson,” she said, and Rlain nodded, then turned away again to focus on the new recruits.
The way Dalinar loves and the way Evi fights
This feels like it's too long for a reblog so I'm making a new post. I'm thinking about that awesome post about the way Dalinar fights and the way Evi loves and rotating it around in my head like it's in the microwave...
I wanna see this from the other side too because I think the Kholin bros also fight like their mother and love like their father.
Dalinar loves from beneath a person, putting them on a pedestal. He loves by saying, “I don’t deserve you.” He loves by saying, “I’ll try harder." He witnesses himself fail to live up to what he feels they should get, but he never stops trying. He holds onto the pain of falling short as a way of dedicating himself to that person.
Adolin does this when he idolizes his father, and when Dalinar notices, "When the boy gets chastised, he just tries harder." He does this with Shallan when he says he doesn't understand her but he'll keep trying. He does it with Maya!
Renarin does this as he tries so hard to serve his father, to live up to his expectations, knowing he'll fail and trying again anyway. He does this when he serves Bridge Four, even though he feels like he isn't worthy of them. The way he loves through humility and service will make him an excellent leader, but without the influence of his mother, he could become gullible like Dalinar.
Now the way Evi fights. She fights from a place of knowing herself deeply and respecting her values. She doesn't fight just because she knows she can win, she fights because it's right. She fights by seeing the truth of the situation and then courageously going forward anyway. She fights even when she knows she can't win. She is afraid, and she still separates herself from her homeland for an uncertain future. She is afraid, and she still speaks her mind. She will tell the truth as she sees it, despite her very real fear for the consequences.
Adolin does this, too. He chooses his fights based on his values. He fights by getting to know the enemy first, and he stays aware of what's going on around him. He knows himself and his capabilities. He can stay calm during the fight. He doesn't just go where he's pointed, he needs to know why and he needs to agree with it.
Renarin is still learning this way of fighting, I think. He is still learning to respect himself. He is seeing the truth, and learning to speak it. For me, this is when he is the most exciting - when he is finding his voice. As much as he wants to be like his father, he will be most powerful when he learns to fight like his mother.
Happy Fanfic Friday!
This one made me cry real human tears.
Weak Blood by SwampSpirit
Not rated (I'd say it's equivalent to what you might find in canon), 2600 words, pre-OB, Renarin POV.
“Should your brother be riding?” “Is there a reason he shouldn't?” Adolin rode forward, between Renarin and the stable hand. “I feel fine,” Renarin added and the woman finally looked to him, wringing her hands. “Prince, please imagine what would happen if you had a fit up there.” Of course he had. He was always picturing them. One of his gentler fits wouldn't be so bad. Adolin might notice in time to ride alongside. The world would shrink down until he floated on a dream. He would get that odd feeling like acrid smoke in the back of his throat. How would the fit make him act? Would he urge the horse forward with no heed to safety? Would he even manage to stay in the saddle? But there were bad fits too. He never remembered anything from those, but he'd heard others describe it. His spine arching, jerking to the side and falling from the horse. The horse spooking, flailing hooves, Adolin trying to pull him to safety. He wanted to explain how it helped to ride, how it centered him. There had to be a way. Perhaps they could strap him to the horse? But the stable-hand seemed afraid. She was darkeyed. If he fell while she was on watch...
