Hit any picket line in Hollywood these days, and there’s a good chance you’ll see signs slamming the lavish paydays for entertainment chiefs

Empty space stretches out in all directions away from you. On either side, two great walls boxing the world in between them. But it isn’t quite empty — in the distance there’s a rope bridge traversing the gap. Pff, as if anyone would have a hope of crossing that flimsy thing. The remnants of what looks to you like a previous bridge lies below it. And if you keep looking, even further back, there’s that—

No. You don’t want to think about that. You can’t help yourself, you shiver. You feel like it’s watching you. Whatever it is.

And then, in that awful emptiness, something falls. A disturbance, it catches your attention immediately. Instinctively you lean forward, tilting your head upwards to get a better look. On that blank white page, a thin black figure. No, it can’t be! A person, hanging there in the air — falling. You don’t even know if they’re alive; you don’t hear a scream.

And then you swear, you swear on this whole godforsaken place, that it looks up. You’re sure of it, its pupil has moved! As the person falls downwards, to eye level and past the rope bridge, that pupil follows it. As if pulled down by gravity too. And they fall a looong way down — god knows how far the bottom is. You hope not to find out. Yeah, let’s not think about that. You wrest your eyes back up from the depth and take a step back.

And then… then you know it’s just you and it. Alone. You get that horrible feeling again. Like it’s watching you. But the difference is, now you know it probably is. You can’t help it — you shiver.
