Born And Bred In Southern Illinois And I Can Tell You, Its A Strange Ass Place. There Are Animals Here
Born and bred in southern Illinois and I can tell you, it’s a strange ass place. There are animals here that shouldn’t be here, bears and mountain lions and we know that black mass in the night was a panther. We know. Because if it was something else we don’t want to know.
We’ve made deals with the creatures in the corn. No one talks about it. No one would even believe you if you brought it up. But we have. They don’t bother you until it’s late at night and those couple idiots you’re not even sure you invited to this bonfire/tailgate/party in the corn decide they’re going to venture off.
The things that live in the soybeans, when there are soybeans, are more unsettling. Lurking beneath the green.
We are the only ones in Illinois in tornado alley. We are neither southern nor northern. Our weather is never the same for more than a few minutes and we get every extreme possible. The fog rolls in and it never leaves. Mention the weather, it’s fine. Do not ask for anything different. Something will hear you and it will not appreciate the request.
Irish people; The faeries aren’t real
Irish people; No fucking way will I go in that faerie ring

Marina paced back and forth, chewing viciously on her fingernails. Tat held up her hands in as placating a gesture as she could manage, the gleaming black eyes and fangs making her every movement far more threatening than intended. “I ssstill don’t quite underssstand why it’sss a big deal.” She said, trying not to hiss too much. Her tongue had finally thinned the rest of the way out and developed the rest of its fork and she still wasn’t used to it.
“Because!” Marina practically screamed, throwing her hands up into the air. Tat dodged back a little, trying to avoid her friend’s fingers. Marina was developing claws and they hurt. “The second everyone finds out I can sing, they’re going to ask to hear, and then they’re all going to find out I’m a siren and then they’re all going to avoid me! I like having a social life, Tat!”
Tat let her friend complain, all the while giving her a fairly unimpressed look. The slip she had to wear around her tail in order to move a little easier on the school’s flooring itched like crazy. Finally, when Marina was done, she clapped a scaled hand down on her friend’s shoulder far harder than was considered kind. “Rina, if they don’t want to be around you caussse you’re a sssiren, they’re not worth being around.” She explained patiently, speaking slowly like she was talking to a toddler. Marina instantly went to argue but one does not look into the eyes of a descendant of Echidna and argue. “Now if that’s done, let’s go to the library. I’m spotting feathers starting to come out of you hair.”
“I told them not to tell anyone I can sing, but they spilled it to someone anyway. Now what do I do?”
At 18, everyone receive a superpower. Your childhood friend got a power-absorption, your best friends got time control, and they quickly rise into top 100 most powerful superheroes. You got a mediocre superpower, but somehow got into the top 10. Today they visit you asking how you did it.
Ruth stared down at the abyss, hands shoved in her jacket pockets and the toes of her shoes hanging over the edge. There was color flashing in the endless darkness and she could feel the roar of the beast below. Wind was sweeping up from the vortex, almost enough to knock her back on her ass but it was like another force was keeping her upright.
“I realize you’re right, step back from the edge. The big baddie escapes but we defeat it later, no one dies and we skip off into the sunset because we’re heroes and we deserve a happy ending.” Despite the noise, despite how she didn’t raise her voice in the slightest from the near dead tone she was using, her voice carried back perfectly. “Yeah, I’d like that. I’ll admit it. But that’s not what’s going to happen.”
Behind her, someone was crying. She heard them let out a sob and, for a moment, she didn’t think she could do this anymore. But she had to. She had so much to live for, yes, and they were all standing at her back, watching her in horror.
“That’s not how this story goes.”
Without looking back, without risking that she’d change her mind when she looked at them, these people who had forgiven her and taken her in, Ruth stepped over the edge.
“There’s gotta be another way. You can’t die here. You’ve got too much to live for.”
“Yeah. That’s always how these stories go, huh?”
Lonnie looked down at the hand stuck wrist deep in his body and tilted his head thoughtfully. The expression on his face could only be described as unbothered. “Well, when you put it that way.” He looked back up at his probably newly made archenemy and smiled.
If Day could have made his expression anymore emotionless or unimpressed, he would have. “You’re an idiot.” He declared, though it did nothing to deter Lonnie’s smile. He removed his hand in one harsh pull, making most everyone in the room with them wince or gag. The hole he’d created healed within a few seconds.
“And this is why you bring invincible immortals along.” Gunther, the leader of Lonnie’s little group, told Mal, the leader of Day’s group. Lonnie poked at his reformed flesh experimentally, Day watching him with annoyance.
“I see the merit.” Mal admitted, eyeing Lonnie up and down. The immortal narrowed his eyes slightly at him, the first sign of his cheerful demeanor dropping, before moving back to Gunther’s side. Like a good little dog. Day sneered at him, earning another bright smile. “Day is very useful and very loyal but even he can be hurt.”
Day barely resisted the urge to growl and snap his teeth at his boss, at them all. Comparing him to that lunatic, bah!
“So, now that all that’s out of the way, let’s get down to business. Do you have someplace we can talk?” Gunther cast Day a somewhat hateful look. “Privately?”
“Yes of course! Follow me.” Mal said, gesturing to the back of the store. It was rather viciously dark back there, setting Gunther’s men on edge. But their leader walked back there alone, Mal’s hand sitting too firmly on his shoulder.
Lonnie bounced on his heels the second they were out of sight. All around him, the others were subtly squaring off against each other. “This is going to be fun!” He gave Day his biggest grin yet.
“I feel threatened.”
“My hand is already inside your stomach. We’ve moved beyond threats.”
