I do feel like Yockey must have eaten somebody’s eyeballs and seen the state of the fandom when this episode would air to get that “Everything means something” line so delicately timed.

There were so many amazing things going on in this episode, though I should probably should stop being surprised by how fantastic every Yockey episode ends up being, and if I may, let’s talk about Cas. Like Edlund, Yockey understands Cas, who he is, his mindset and what drives him, remarkably well. Something in particular that struck me this episode, was the emphasis on the two different sides of Cas. 14x14 simultaneously showed him being remarkably close to human, whilst still giving us constant reminders that he is not.

Between his understanding and worrying over Dean’s state of mind at the diner, to him not being able to heal anyone, whether it was the victims of the gorgon or Dean, all the way to him revealing his understanding of the term A.V. club (and you know he was just parroting back the same definition Dean had given him at some point in the past), Cas’ connection to “things, people, feelings” or in other words “human things” has never been stronger.

And yet…his conversation with Jack reveals how acutely aware he is of his status as a cosmic being. He’s not human and he knows it. He’s an angel and he’s not blind to the pain that comes with that for beings like him and Jack. Beings that care so deeply about human things in a human way, but are also decidedly not human.

Cas has ostensibly been thinking about losing the people he loves, and being forced to carry on without them for quite some time. When Jack asks him what the point is, his answer is very telling:

Cas: The point is that you were here at all, and you got to know them. When they’re gone, it will hurt, but that hurt will remind you of how much you loved them.

Jack: That sounds awful.

Cas: It is. But it’s also living.

This conversation also gives further credence to Cas’ assertion in 14x09 that “this life may be a lot of things, but it’s rarely happy.” Any happiness that Cas experiences is always tempered with the realisation that those moments are fleeting, and while he may be able to enjoy the company of the people he loves right now in the present, in a relatively short amount of time, they’ll be gone and he will have to live for eternity without them. And we know for Cas, living means loving people with everything you have, even though all you’re going to receive in return is the pain of missing them when they’re inevitably gone.

After all “too much heart was always Castiel’s problem.”
