A Subtrist Musing

I ruminate about my present when I hear that you’re back in our town
It takes me back to the cool summer nights
I listen to your tunes and feel the breeze
I read your words and feel the cold
I saw it in your eyes as you noticed the years pass by through the city
Now I’m oceans away and imagine all the alternate threads this pulled
One where we oscillate, one where I make your fears come true
One where you find a brighter glint, and one where we end up intertwined
While you stayed in the past
I try to reconcile what once was and what it is now
I won’t sing a letter in your name
It’s only an occasional wonderment
I could be looking at mosaic art from a window across the street
You could be driving into the sunset with your perfect composure
I will think of the cool summer nights all those years ago
And my heart sighs, “Did you ever find what you were looking for?”
my dad was talking about how love is a ghost. it slips under door frames, lies forgotten in the attic, leaves the windows open for the breeze to blow in and scatter the papers on your desk. love is a storm, it's what haunts you at night. he said that love is a ghost we chase our whole lives.
my mom said that love is a garden you water everyday. you can poison it, or grow it with love and sunlight. there will be disasters that uproot your garden, but just like the patience with which you wait for plants to grow, you have to let your love grow back like apple blossoms after a winter storm.
maybe the most important question you can ever ask someone is, "what do you think love is?" because understanding is instrumental to love. you have to love someone in their language, you have to fight for someone who thinks that love is won after a hard battle, and you have to wipe away the blood of someone who thinks that love is a sword held by its blade.
The Restraints Of Hope
The past continues to hold me back.
Even now.
It almost acts like a chain.
Chains that not even bolt cutters can crack.
So instead, I'm stuck.
Reliving the very moments that created those restraints
And all the while, I'm quietly wishing
Wishing that these bounds would loosen
Hoping they would stop carving into my skin.
But they never do.
The shackles just continue to drip with crimson.
As I continue to hope.
