Your writing will always feel awkward to you, because you wrote it.

Your plot twists will always feel predictable, because you created them.

Your stories will always feel a bit boring to you, because you read them a million times.

They won't feel like that for your reader.

Fell down a 5am pop culture/celebrity rabbit hole after seeing an article discussing the movie adaptation of that Colleen Hoover book "It Ends With Us". (I try not to hate on authors I haven't read but based on the reviews and excerpts of her writing I've seen I'm going to believe the majority here and say they are not that great. Hoover also gets a bad rep for glamorizing abusive relationships in her writing which is why I was interested in reading about the new movie just to see what the angle there is.)

Anyway, the director Justin Baldoni wants it to be a serious film about domestic abuse but lead actress Blake Lively is selling the film as a funny romcom. At first I was thinking it was a Twilight situation where the actors know how trash the book is and can't take it seriously. I mean the lead character is named Lily Blossom Bloom how serious can you be....but after watching a few clips and interviews I fully believe that Lively's flippant mischaracterization of the movie is weird as fuck. Hearing her promote her hair care line, drinks company and say "grab your friends and wear your florals!" was just so jarring placed in contrast to Baldoni's earnest discussion about the film's subject matter. I feel like if she said 1 serious thing about abuse or DV or the graphic nature of the movie I would be more sympathetic but. Wow... It's a category 9 out-of-touch celebrity moment....

The way that the cast (with the exception of Justin Baldoni) of It Ends With Us is handling the actual story is so disheartening and gross. It Ends With Us is the recountment of a domestic violence survivor, a story about her and her abuser. It’s not a “fun” “funny” “movie with hot boys and girls” story (Blake Lively’s actual words to describe the film), it’s a story about the nuances of DV, and the hope that you can end the generational trauma. Ryle IS Lily Bloom’s abuser and a perpetrator. He is NOT a male romantic interest in a romance novel, he is an abuser. Lily Bloom falling in love with Ryle and narrating it shows us how difficult it is to leave that type of relationship, how we ignore the red flags because of the feelings and complexities of it all. Like viewers and readers need to understand that.

STOP ROMANTICIZING THIS STORY PLEASE

Justin baldoni decided to adapt It Ends With Us because he thought that stories about domestic violence, and specifically escaping and life beyond domestic violence deserved to be platformed.

Instead of being supported, he’s been mean girl’d by the cast; that’s treating the film like its this cutesy rom com : and I think this rly encapsulates everything that’s wrong with the book, and the fanbase it’s amassed

This whole Justin Baldoni/Blake Lively situation is giving Black Sheep/Scapegoat VS Toxic Family. From my perspective, it seems like Justin is consistently

A) the only one taking the theme of the story seriously and is actively spreading resources for DV survivors, which inadvertently makes his coworkers look bad because they are framing the film as Girly Pop Romance and God Forbid they let their irresponsible density ruin their own image, no no, it's JUSTIN's fault (sarcasm),

B) the only one who seems to have anything genuinely nice to say about his cast & crew despite the way his castmates and media are handling this situation

As someone who is the Black Sheep/Scapegoat of their family, it just really gives the vibe of someone who is trying to do everything right and is being ganged up on.

I feel bad for the guy.

I know this isn't my usual content but I just wanted to talk about it.

There's a chance that I'm wrong and Justin did something to alienate his coworkers, but... I don't know. Doesn't seem like it with the information we currently have.

You know I never got the hype around Ryan Reynolds and being the most handsome man and Blake lively being this Kween™️ even during their most successful years (think gossip girl and crazy stupid love) but now I get why I was never into them and always felt their vibe was off

It ends with us is NOT about ‘grabbing your girlies’ and ‘wearing your florals’ it’s about domestic abuse which is a very serious issue affecting not just one person but entire generations

all this fiasco around 'it ends with us' has made me lose the love I had for Blake Lively- dude branding a movie abt DV as the romcom of the year is just sick and twisted and promoting your new brand instead of actually taking about the issue what are we 2???? lol they even mean girl-ed Justin Baldoni who actually wants to talk about the real issue here- and there's this deadpool x wolverine x it ends with us drama

the fact that young adults would actually romanticize this shitshow is so disheartening, normalizing domestic violence is NOT OKAY

to you, it’s a shitty sentence. to some random bitch 500 miles away, it’s a fire line that’ll haunt them for the next 17 years.

you don’t know how impactful your writing is because it’s been in your brain for far too long now. you’ve stared at it for hours and repeated “this sucks” over and over again to the point that you killed your capacity to feel anything about your work.

but trust me, once you get your shit out there, someone’s gonna go over that paragraph you hate and go “jesus fucking christ” and put the book down to have an existential crisis.

Y'all better show the Paralympics the same amount of love and attention btw.
