I think people gloss over the significance of this scene, and it's often misinterpreted. Commonly in asian cultures, educators are held with very high regard, almost as high as parents and doctors. Even in gintama, they previously talked about how impactful teachers were in the lives of students and how they shaped the crux of their minds

E.g. when it was exposed to everyone that gintoki wasn't able to save his teacher(i forgot the arc name but where oboro first appears), it was considered a big deal cuz typically u are meant to serve and revere ur teacher's due to the impact they bring

So automatically in these cultures, since the teachers are held with very high expectations, they are to be treated with the same respect and dignity too. So that's why it was a very big problem when shoyo died. Since he was a monumental role and as their mentor, he was supposed to be helped in times of need as gratitude from the students. Which they failed at first. Which is why takasugi had talked about how all of them wouldn't fail this time and protect their teacher, and that he would serve him.

As in these cultures as we know, it's a norm to follow whatever ur elders say or do, especially if it's your parents and teachers. As they play the most important roles during the growth of a person. Commonly, ur expected to hold them with the highest respect and help them out/serve them as a child who's learning from them in a way to show gratitude and display your courageous personality(to adhere to tradition). Regardless, education shaped a person's life. Hence, the educators who take up these responsibilities are also universally revered. Hence, the meaning of the dialogue behind this scene.

I hope this helps people understand the context and background behind this whole school in general. Since its kinda common for a lot of people to take this scene out of context and shape it with different interpretations. But gintama does make a lot of japanese references where international audiences won't understand right away. So if you know the basic context, I think it will be much more obvious to understand the story behind shoka sonjuku. (Long live takasugi)

Even though I am the biggest Gintama simp of all time, this show still shocks me every time I come back to it and realize how good it is again. I was going into Yoshiwara in Flames and was like, yeah, this arc sold me on the series when I was a kid, but does it hold up? It doesn’t get talked about a lot. And the first two episodes I was like, yeah, the animations not as hot as i thought it was back then. Things that blew my mind, like Kamui fighting Hosen, Kagura losing her shit, maybe they were only good because they caught me off guard.

So I dropped it, and just now came back to finish the arc. Holy cow. I cried. Twice! What do I even say about Sorachi’s writing man. Is it in the way things are woven together? How does it get me every single time?

I’ve thought this before, but all of Gintama’s fights are more or less agents for expressing the strength of the feelings of its characters. It’s really effective.

And also, the strength of the symbolism. The sun, moon and flame imagery is really important for all of Yoshiwara, especially this arc.

The dialogue? The character writing? All amazing, of course.

Maybe it’s the theme. The themes of human dignity, connection, and how indomitable the human spirit is in the face of oppression. Maybe those are just good themes. Except if it was that I’d feel the same way about One Piece!

I think it’s the love. Every character, their actions are driven by their love for one another. It’s the common denominator. Everything becomes sharper in the light of that. Sorachi has an impeccable understanding of human emotion. He knows that deep down people just want to belong, to love, and to stand strong with human dignity. And he tells stories about that. About how it can go wrong, about how it can save us. About fighting for it.

Idk these are my unorganized thoughts after just watching Yoshiwara in Flames. This is still my favorite series.

gintama really does the funny man / straight man gag really really well, sometimes you're so immersed in the absurdity that having it pointed out is funny in and of itself. they know exactly when to execute and when to stop, got the formula down to a science

a gharara is a type of pants that are flared and pleated below the knee usually paired with knee or thigh length traditional shirts

jhumka are ornate bell like earrings

and the specific style of flat shoes depicted here are called khussay.

rose garlands called gajray are sometimes worn by women as bracelets or around hair buns etc, as depicted here. variations exist for different flowers too, such as the jasmine, which is the national flower.
