Avas Disability Has A Massive Impact On The Story Line And The Theme Of The First Season. It Very Much

Ava’s disability has a massive impact on the story line and the theme of the first season. It very much shapes her character and her choices. It also doesn’t go completely away, even with a literal divine plot (mobility) device. I suspect that anyone whose upset at how ‘slow’ the show is went into it with the expectation that the story was “protagonist is chosen, protagonists makes token protest, something narratively happens that forces protagonist to get on board with saving the world/fighting the bad guy, end credits of first episode roll, second episode begins with protagonist fully on board except a pithy one liner halfway through the season that calls back to the fact that they didn’t start on board.”

That’s not the Warrior Nun story. That’s the story that leads to ‘monster of the week’ first seasons (Buffy, Supernatural, Grimm, Charmed, Legacies, etc.). That’s so common that we as an audience almost expect it. We expect the ‘reluctant’ protagonist to get over whatever silly hang up they have so we can live vicariously through them. We wait impatiently for the narrative to plow through that piece so we can get to the ‘real’ story. Because that’s how these narratives choose to introduce us to the world, with the protagonist.

But Warrior Nun does it differently. It intentionally slows that down and says “wait a minute, our character has agency actually and all she’s wanted was to live a normal life. So she’s going to try her darnedest to do that now that she can.” And Ava knows its not the same. She knows that JC’s friends aren’t hers and this life isn’t hers. But it could be.

One of the things I love more about Warrior Nun (and Ava) is that she decides to make the choice to fight. It’s not forced on her. They tried forcing it on her and it fails. Her choices matter. Good or bad, right or wrong, her choices matter. And when given the choice, when given the information and space to decide, Ava makes the caring one. Ava steps up not because she was forced to but because she wants to. And I think that just goes back to the theme of choosing who we are that lies at the heart of Warrior Nun. Ava’s disability was something done to her. Ava becoming the halo bearer was something done to her. Who Ava is has always been the person who decides how she handles it. And who she is, is beautiful.

Hmm so it turns out many people consider Ava a bad protagonist and find her annoying??? And that the show is slow??? And that it endorses disability erasure???

I hardly ever fall in love with main leads especially 'the chosen one' types and yet Ava was so easy to get behind and even relatable and I love her so much. And god I wish the show was even slower and it had more episodes like I wanted to see the dynamics between the sisters in depth, Ava and Bea's relationship progressing, little lost moments, their quiet times, their training sessions, them joking around and being normal idk. It still went by too fast?

And I might be wrong here but to me it wasn't disability erasure. Ava's disability is very much a part of her throughout. It's why she spends half the season running away because she hasn't lived yet. It's why she can't give up the halo either. It's why she can't drain the halo too much or can't fight as good as other warrior nuns (minus not being trained yet of course). It's her deepest fear. And it is so fundamental to her and Bea's relationship too like Bea touching her after that fight with Crimson, Bea reassuring her, Bea understanding her fears and hesitance....her disability is a very much constant presence throughout the narrative even though under the surface and ahhhhh I want to scream so bad rn.

I'm straight up not having a good day today and then finding out about these shitty opinions about this beloved sunshine of a character—

Are people allowed to have opinions I don't agree with? Yes.

Do I want to hit them on the head with a stick despite? Also Yes.

Now I'm wondering am I biased because I've read way too many fics and post analysis' and therefore see more depth than there was? Does it even matter?

I see the “hottest 100 guys” list and I go, “okay? I guess. Who makes these lists?” Then I see the “hottest 100 guys digitally genderbent” list and oh fuck, no, I get it! They *should* be on that list. Oh god is this what straight women see in them? They *should* sell out movie theatres.

why are you into girls? ....

have you seen them

Wonder how this pairs with people who have ADHD using sugar to self-medicate dopamine. Is it ‘sugar rush’ kicking in or is it dopamine production dropping back to ‘regular’ (aka not enough) levels? Correlation is not causation. But also, our minds are designed to find patterns even if it’s the *wrong* one.

i learned that sugar does not cause hyperactivity in children. This myth is based on a single 1978 study; no subsequent study has shown a relationship (x)

The Great Dark One had terrorized Isheazar for time immemorial. When Sanson had first climb from the egg the elders had spoke of how the Great Dark One was the world ending beast. It was predator without equal, eldritch in all things, and took great joy in tormenting those it deigned to hunt. Be they Dwarf, Dragon, or God. Unstoppable and evil it had no name for any name would to be too confining, cause too much complacency in the hearts of those it hunted. Some of the oldest spoke of a great battle, of all the thinking species of the world aligned against The Great Dark One. Emess, the Eternal One, oldest dragon in all the lands, still spoke with haunted craze about how The Great Dark One had fun felling their legions. There were whispers, rumours, that pieces of The Great Dark One had come of it. Had slipped between dimensions.

Sanson would not have cared beyond a passing fancy if not for what he’d seen when he looked across dimensions. He’d expected to find entire realities striped bare. Species without end gone at the claws and hunger of even mere pieces of The Great Dark One. The first five realities he found exactly what he expected. However, his Dimensional Magics thesis required ten sources of evidence so despite his weary heart he continued. The seventh dimension, one with magic so weak as to be non-existent, he found something trouble. And confusing. And frankly so horrifying the thought had led him to drink Deep Ale. He didn’t remember what happened after.

After remembered him. Sanson woke to on of these strange beings, a human, poking impatiently at his cheek. Sanson froze with terror so deep his very stomach chilled to ice. “Hey,” the human said. “Last night was fun and all, but I got work on Monday and I need some Advil.”

Sanson blinks.

The human points at a dimensional spell circle. A dimensional spell circle that is etched in Sanson’s floor with Sanson’s writing. “So, are you like, gonna send me back now?”

Sanson’s mouth drops open in shock. “I summoned you!” Sanson squeaks out in tight throated surprise.

“Yeah duh,” the human says. “I was there. Here.” The human sighs. “Look, of all the reasons to be summoned to another dimension a week long bender was pretty awesome. No regrets, right. But Mr. Wayne’s probably getting hungry and every single thing here is made for people at least a foot smaller than me. I slept on the floor. I haven’t done that since undergrad. So I should probably be getting back pretty soon.”

Sanson mind is reeling but for some unremembered reason ‘Mr. Wayne’ stands out of the human’s weird speech. “Mr. Wayne?”

The human laughs. “My cat,” she explains. “It makes sense if you’ve ever read Batman comics.”

Sanson only knows what one of those things mean. My cat. He swallows heavily. Sanson doesn’t remember this specific human but he does remember a dance of horrors. Seeing household after household welcoming and catering to small pieces of The Great Dark One. His first thought was that they were slaves but a closer look showed him they were willing servants. A whole race domesticated by these ‘cats’. His terror and disgust must be palpable to the human. Had he told her? Had he spoke at all of The Great Dark One?

Sanson licks his lips nervously. “There is,” he says slowly, mind racing, “one last thing I’d like to show you. Before you go.” He’s pretty sure this is crazy. Or he’s gone insane. But there were a large number of humans living and surviving in proximity to pieces of The Great Dark One. Where Isheazar itself is collapsing, consumed bite by bite. He has to try.

“Sure,” the human shrugs. “If you throw in that magic sword with the bag of holding full of gold you promised me.”

Sanson nods his head eagerly. Why this human wants such a soft useless metal and magic that will barely work in her home reality he doesn’t care. It’s a matter of minutes for the human to pack a bag full and a couple more for Sanson to etch a minor spell of transference. The pop into existence far too close to The Great Dark One for Sanson’s comfort. It’s magical interference made targeting accurately impossible within a horse’s tire of it.

The human gasps and her eyes widen. Sanson’s unfamiliar with humans but in his own species he’d say that look a lot like ‘I just saw a cute baby’ face. The human coos. “Hello, kitten-”

Sanson looks on with growing distress as the human obliviously approaches The Great Dark One making little clicking noises in the back of her throat. “Ummmm… human sir? That is an eldritch being.” His warning is ignored. The human holds up a hand, rubbing fingers together in a beckoning motion. “Not pet. Do not touch.”

“Look, it’s fine. If it looks like a cat, it is a cat.” The human dismisses his warning. Sanson regrets his decision so much. He didn’t want to watch someone he brought here get killed. He should have realized that the domestication of humans had left them brutally unprepared to face-

Eldritch purring causes the foundation of reality to shiver in fear. The human is petting a slow stroke down The Great Dark One’s spine and scritching behind it’s ear. The Great Dark One leans into the touch with eyes half-closed in pleasure.

“Whose a pretty kitty?” The human coos. “You are. Yes you are.”

The Great Dark One tilts it’s head back and allows the human access to it’s vulnerable throat the way only the truly immortal would dare. The human rubs softly under The Great Dark One’s chin. Sanson determines that he will see this human on her way before he returns to finding the bottom of Deep Ale. He may never come out again, after all.

“Hello, kitten-“ “Ummmm… human sir? That is an eldritch being. Not pet. Do not touch.” “Look, it’s fine. If it looks like a cat, it is a cat.” eldritch purring sounds

Ok, but I also feel like Bea wouldn’t just pretend her kids aren’t there and push them back without looking at them. Like, yes, this is a very important meeting and the whole world is potentially watching but these are her kids and they come first. Bea’s going to do the opposite of what her parents did and make sure they know they come first. So when the toddler comes up she just reaches down a hand, grabs them by the jumper and sets them in her lap without pause. And when the toddler pats her on the face and calls her name “mum” she looks at the camera and says, dead serious, “My apologizes, something very important just came up.” Then she looks down at her toddler and goes “yes darling?” And the news studio just lets it happen because a) adorable and b) turning off her camera would just make them look like assholes.

So when Ava stumbles into the room (literally) and hustles the infant away she has to come back for the toddler who is explain very serious things to her wife on national television. (“mommy go potty I come say hi”). Ava’s 100% ready to die of embarrassment when she grabs their toddler from Bea’s lap but Bea grabs her for a quick kiss and a ‘thank you’ so that makes it a little better. And no, she doesn’t care that all of national television saw her look at her wife with wide eyed adoration. Or walk into the door she closed because she was too busy starring at her wife. Who just smirked smuggly and returned to her interview.

😂 if it’s canonverse, ava in her haste to get the kids out asap b4 they can disrupt beatrice’s meeting even further and so she phases in and/or out of the room when she goes to get the kids not realizing that’s the most disruptive thing there 😭😭😭

if it’s non canonverse ava, and a no powers universe ava, while trying to grab the kids she probably trips or knocks something down or vv obviously very nearly does so

the only reason canonverse ava didn’t is because she’s a trained fighter and fought in a whole holy (🥁) war and the urgency of trying to get her & beatrice’s kids in and out without being even more disruptive kicked that part of her in, but even then it was probably a near thing lmao

Re this ask and this original post

Canonverse Ava phasing into the room then immediately back out with the kids is a hilarious visual. It would just be a blip on the screen and then the kids are gone,,, like one of those Bigfoot sighting pictures (the only example I can come up with lmaoo).

Non canonverse Ava wears grippy socks around the house 1000% so in trying to slide into the room she just ends up falling face first (maybe…. maybe this was inspired by real events in my life… maybe)
