its pulling on the "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" philosophical thought experiment, with the idea being "if nobody perceives something happening, does it?"

i used this to highlight historic transmasc erasure.

"if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, who writes that it fell?" - if a trans man kills himself for being transgender, and he never told anyone, who writes that a trans man killed himself? they don't. at best they say a woman killed herself.

"if a tree is cut down in the forest and the people who cut it down did so unlawfully, or it was the 50th tree they cut that day, why would they record it?" - if a trans man tells his family, his husband, that he's a man, and they kill him, why would they record it? if they send him to an asylum, then he's another crazy woman, and hysterical women are common (as believed, not agreeing), who records that a trans man was imprisoned for being trans? they wouldn't. they'd at best say another woman fell to hysteria and had to be locked up.

the point being - trans men are not recorded as existing historically, because they didn't care about women, and they extra didn't care about "crazy" women. the trans men we have records for are few and far between, even though we know trans men had to have been more common, because it was rare for someone to hear the tree falling.
