His bedsheets smelled like the summer breeze. Crisp, clean and warm, as though they were still fluttering on the washing line outside. Yet, in the sun’s absence, the celestial moon hung in the night sky. A crescent, akin to the sliced oranges arranged like flower petals on your plate, courtesy of your mother.  

It was placed within arm’s reach, on the nightstand, as you laid on your stepbrother’s bed. Your mother’s head peeked around the door and left it ajar before she pitter pattered away. You watched him study while your parents were watching a black and white movie downstairs. Taehyung hadn’t bothered to turn on the lights, the lamp on his desk casting a golden glow upon his features.

Just like the facts written in his textbook, your stepbrother’s beauty was irrefutable. You saw glimpses of his father, in the curve of his jaw and his lips. You had never met his mother prior to her death but you had seen the grainy, coloured pictures preserved in a family photo album. He had his mother’s eyes.

Standing side by side, Taehyung and you looked nothing alike. It used to bewilder people until they understood that your relationship grew from nurture rather than nature. However, even if you were related by blood, nothing guaranteed that you’d win the genetic lottery like he did. Living in a country plagued with unrealistic beauty standards and lookism, your stepbrother was always put on a pedestal for his beauty. A halo surrounded him wherever he went and perhaps, it was difficult to not think of him as an angel when he looked like something entirely out of this world.

Mark:

Your eyes went wide as you read the statement that went out from SM, making your way upstairs to where Mark was laying on your bed. He looked to you in confusion as you stared at him, shaking your head too.

“You put out a statement telling your fans not to send me rude messages,” you breathed, struggling to believe what Mark had done for you.

“Of course,” he smiled, patting the space on the bed beside him, “I’m not going to just stand back and let them say what they’ve said about you.”

A hand ran through your hair, “what if you get intro trouble for doing this? Your fans won’t like it.”

Mark shrugged as you took a seat beside him, “I don’t care if they like it or not, I’m putting a stop to it. I told you that I’d keep you safe, and I’ll do whatever it takes to do that Y/N.”

“Please don’t get protective enough that you start risking things for yourself,” you asked of him, “I can’t let you do that.”

“I promise I’ll be careful,” Mark assured you, “but I’m not going to let people think that they can walk all over you too.”

“Be careful, that’s all that I ask.”

Renjun:

His hands took the packet out of your hands straight away, opening it with ease. Renjun was expecting you to think appreciatively, but instead you were annoyed that another job was taken from you.

“Did you not want those?” He asked in confusion, watching you place the bag of crisps that he had opened for you down on the counter.

“I wanted to open them,” you sighed in reply to him, “I’m trying to train my hand back up, but you keep stopping me from doing that Ren.”

His head nodded slowly, “I just thought that I was being helpful, I’m sorry you thought otherwise.”

Your head shook as he spoke, “it’s not that you’re not helpful, but I’ve got my cast off now, my arm is on the mend. You can’t hold my hand forever; I’m trying to do things for myself.”

“Maybe it’s because I’m so used to protecting you,” he reasoned, “having you not need me anymore feels a little strange.”

“How about this?” You offered, “if I need help, I’ll make sure to ask you, but if I don’t, then you leave me on my own?”

“That’s something I can agree to.”

Jeno:

Your hands immediately came up to shield your eyes as you walked out of the airport, stunned by how many cameras were around. Jeno could tell you were nervous too, wrapping his arm around your frame.

“Excuse me!” He shouted, loud enough for most of the photographers to hear, with some stepping slightly aside to let the two of you through.

“I can’t see,” you whispered as you kept your head down to avoid the flashes, trying your best to follow where Jeno was walking along the path.

His eyes looked to you once again, “move out of the way,” he called out, much louder than before.

As the crowd got smaller, allowing you both to walk freely again, you couldn’t help but smile across at Jeno. “I’ve never heard you speak to someone like that before, you were loud.”

“I had to get them to listen somehow,” Jeno weakly smiled, “I wasn’t going to let any of them stay and hurt you Y/N.”

“Thank you,” you smiled across at him. “I could get used to this bossy version of you too, you were very stern back there.”

“When I’m protecting you, of course.”

“Isn’t seven minutes in heaven like a game from high school?”

“Stop being a baby. If you didn’t like the idea, you wouldn’t have put your name in.”

“All you guys are just looking forward to finally getting some action.”

“She says, as if she’s getting action on the daily.”

You sit back and watch the scene in front of you unravel. Any other party, any other day, you wouldn’t have bothered to take part of the stupid game. But what could it hurt? At this point, you have nothing to lose. Maybe you’d walk away with a new potential lover. Maybe you’d finally get Renjun’s attention.

It’s stupid really. You invited Renjun to the party, hoping he’d realize all he was missing out on shutting himself up in study rooms all the time. He takes school very seriously. You guess, if your major was aeronautical engineering, you would too. The boy is smart. Less so when it came to emotions, or specifically, the blaring crush you’ve had on him since your freshman English class. 

He wasn’t always like this though. Back then, you recall one of the things that drew you to him was the way he connected with people, with words, and with art. The poems he wrote for that English class were deep and meaningful, even the teacher asked him if he wanted to submit some of them for publication. And you were lucky enough to be paired with him for your presentations, equally splitting the parts and working together, his friendship practically fell into your lap. And as you watched him pour his heart out onto paper, you grew to like him. Really like him. 

Up until this past year, he was your ongoing study date, Chinese takeout over textbooks an often occurrence. Back then, you could easily convince him to take a break, head down with you to the pool for breaks, sometimes a walk around the quad to get some fresh air. You’d never experienced the butterflies, the goosebumps. You’d never looked forward to seeing someone again right after you just left them. Not before Renjun.

Now, as you pursue your arts degree, Renjun, his science degree, you’ve had to be more intentional. And you were growing tired of being the only one going out of your way. Bringing him lunch, texting him to make sure he was doing okay, it seemed to be all in vain. Especially lately, he would take two days to respond to any of your texts. 

Losing him at this party was the nail in the coffin. You’d invited him, and now he was nowhere to be found, not caring to tell you where he ran off to. And that was how you fell into this convenient game of seven minutes in heaven. 

“You ready?” A hand extends in front of you.

“Wait, huh?” You glance up to see Haechan. You don’t remember how exactly you met, but once upon a time, you had a class together. He flirts with you just about as much as he flirts with any other girl in his vicinity. Despite being a player, he balances it well with being a polite, good person. He’s the kind of guy that’d screw you senseless one night, but then help carry your books to class the next day.

SCHOOL AND WORK HAS BEEN BEATING YOU UP these past few weeks, and kyungmin could see how tired you are when you get home. though sometimes you came home first ─ whenever it was his, he would watch you drop your bag on the floor and drag your feet to the bathroom.

he knew you’re tired but kyungmin knew there was no need to point out the obvious. just being there with you was enough for him, offering his arms for you to run and lay on when you want to.

today was different, though. as kyungmin almost drifted off to sleep on the couch waiting for you, the door opens and he immediately stands up from his place to greet you. tiredly smiling at him, you greet kyungmin who was making his way towards you.

“ how’s work?” your boyfriend asks, pulling you gently by the arms to cage you in a warm embrace. you don’t answer just yet, basking in kyungmin’s comfort. he always felt like home ─ and you were never more thankful than this time when he’s here beside you.

“ tiring. my boss has been extra naggy and professors are giving so much assignments” you confess, tightening your hug around the tall boy. kyungmin frowns at this, picking you up bridal style and making his way to your room. you squeal when he lays down with you and tangling his legs around you.
