All the Things that are Still Wrong With WestAllen

The self-proclaimed gold standard couple of the Flash Tv Show is not as perfect as some people think. Though this pairing has a lot of flaws, I’ll be sticking to the ones that have either been reinforced or blatantly established in s04. These are all the things that are still wrong with WestAllen:

1. Their Entire Relationship Still Feels Like Incest:

Barry and Iris grew up in the same home and even though Joe never officially adopted Barry, he might as well have adopted him coz he keeps calling him his son. This has been my biggest issue with WestAllen, the writers of the show knew they wanted to make them the main couple and they still had them grow up as foster siblings. Plus, the fact that Joe can’t even stop talking about how he raised the both of them, even during the rehearsal dinner for their wedding, makes WestAllen give off a lot incestuous vibes.

2. Barry Still isn’t Completely Honest with Iris:

In 04x07, Barry believes Devoe is a villain but no one else believes him, not even Iris even though she keeps saying “we are the flash”. When Iris asks Barry to stop obsessing over the Devoes, he agrees with her and then goes behind her back to do some more digging until he gets busted. Barry should have been completely honest with Iris coz they were about get married in a week. Regardless, Barry is just too used to keeping things from her and this leads me to my next point:

3. Barry Still Can’t Confront Iris When she does Things he doesn’t Like:

In 04×03, Barry is really uncomfortable when Iris surprises him with her plan for them to elope. He gets even more uncomfortable when Iris is behaving in a really disrespectful way to the family that had just buried their dead but he doesn’t say anything bc he doesn’t want her to get upset just as he doesn’t say anything when she makes him attend couple’s therapy after telling him about the therapy session 30 minutes before their appointment. Even when Barry raises a protest from time to time, he just says a little bit of what’s on his mind and then fakes a smile to keep her happy and this is linked to my next point:

4. Iris Still Admires Other Men in front of Barry:

When Iris talks about how hot other men are right in front of Barry, he always raises an objection. He did so in 03×08 and 04×04 but you could tell he had a lot more to say on the matter but he had to let it go so it doesn’t turn into a big fight. This wouldn’t have been a problem if I was certain Iris wouldn’t flare up and get really upset if Barry had talked about any woman the way Iris casually talks about Oliver or Ralph Dibny. The double standard is just too clear and too ridiculous to ignore and it’s not the only ridiculous expection that Iris has placed on Barry and that takes me to my 5th point:

5. Iris Still Believes Barry Needs Her Permission before He Can Save the World:

04×02 showed a WestAllen that was ready to confront their problems by attending therapy but that entire therapy storyline ended after one episode and the couple basically ended up settling their squabble privately with a ridiculous request made by Iris West. She said Barry should’ve asked her what she thought about him leaving her to go and save the world and when he reassured her of his love, she said he can’t know what she’s thinking until he asks her thereby implying that next time they are in such a situation, Barry must ask her what she thinks before he does anything and that is so stupid coz decisions like this need to be taken swiftly. But unfortunately, Barry is always wrong and Iris is always right and that is literally my next point:

6. Barry is Always Wrong and Iris is Always Right:

Whenever I watch WestAllen’s storyline unfold, one thing is always clear to me - sometimes Barry is wrong and sometimes Iris is wrong but that’s not what either of them will ever say. Iris is always constantly pointing out anything Barry does wrong while conveniently absolving herself of any wrong doing and Barry just goes with it. The lopsided nature of this routine is just wrong and this would have been pointed out to Barry and Iris if they stayed in therapy for more than a day but they’re always in too much of a hurry to stick around for such things and that’s why my final point exists.

7. Their Entire Relationship is Extremely Rushed:

Barry and Iris moved from dating to engaged to married in the space of one season and a couple of episodes. Neeedless to say, their entire relationship is rushed and they’re getting deeper and deeper into it without taking out time to really talk about all the issues listed above and so some of these issues are either left unresolved or are never even brought up.

Conclusion:

Barry and Iris need to go back to therapy. They have some unresolved issues that just makes it hard to believe anyone that calls their relationship perfect.
