I just realised something.

Jon didn’t turn around to say goodbye to Sansa, and he didn’t turn around to wave; he turned around to look at her. 

He only gave her a wave after a long while. 

And as she saw him wave, she smiled. Look at how touched and emotional she looks, and how delicately she waves back. 

He lets his arm fall down heavily on his leg as he looks at her smiling at him. Then he smiles back, a painful and worried smile. He doesn’t want to leave her. He looks at her for one more moment before turning away reluctantly. 

As he rides off, we get not one, but three long shots of Sansa staring at him.

The third shot shows us Littlefinger in the distance.

He’s still stroking his throat after being pinned against the wall and strangled by Jon, who promised to kill him if he touches Sansa. He looks at Jon in the distance, then at Sansa. Littlefinger must’ve realised something as only a few episodes later he strangely tells Sansa how beautiful the woman Jon has gone to see is, and teases her with their possible marriage to get a reaction from her.

But we know all that. What I didn’t realise earlier is that Jon literally turned around to stare at Sansa. He didn’t turn around and waved instantly; he turned around and looked at her for as long as he could. The emotional way she smiled when she saw him waving, the way his arm fell on his leg as he didn’t have the strength to leave her, Jon’s painful smile that looks like his heart was breaking… It strikes such a massive anti-parallel to Jon leaving Dra*onstone. There’s so much more to this scene than I originally thought and I’ve cried about 6 times re-watching it closely
