The black depths of realspace are replaced by the swirling blue-and-white chaos of hyperspace, and Chewbacca relaxes back into the co-pilot’s seat.  The last jump necessary to reach Luke, initiated.  He looks at the young human woman beside him, reading the lines of tension in her pale face.  He has gotten very good at reading humans in his time with Han.

Han. He closes his eyes.  The memory is still too fresh.  He remembers the shaft of red, angry light emerging from his honor-brother’s back. He remembers the fall into the depths of the planet-killing world.

He remembers the feeling of his honor-sister, weeping silently into the fur of his chest as he held her close.  Leia did love Han.  It was not a healthy pairing, but Chewbacca is old and wise, and knows that health has no bearing on love.

“Chewie?” Rey asks, startling him from his reverie.  “Can I – can I ask you a question?”
