A cold blade against your throat wakes you. Your reaction is instant. You were prepared, waiting impatiently for the day to come. 

Your murderer is beneath you in an instant. His own blade is pressed right under his eye, your fingers have a tight grasp on his throat. 

He wiggles and growls, dark eyes glued to your face.

“Uh-hu”, you warn, pressing the blade tighter to his skin. 

He grunts and eyes his shiny demise. 

“Fuck”, he presses out, forsaking his fight against you. 

“Better." 

You tilt his head up, nails bruising his skin.

"Now tell me. Who could be so reckless to attack me in my bedchambers?”

“You have to kill me before I talk”, he spits. 

You study him. Strong body with muscles that strain against his dark clothes. Pretty face with a chiseled jaw and soft cheeks, there is dirt and sweat on his skin. He is panting heavily, chapped lips parted. His nails are dirty and broken. That means he climbed up your walls. Logical. Your castle’s wolves would have found him otherwise. Clever. Means he knew the grounds and your customs. 

“You climbed. Impressive. That would have been a high fall had you slipped. Fatal even." 

He growls and sits up, getting himself pressed down again. 

"It would have been worth it”, he spits.

He is angry and filled with hate. It is directed at you. Interesting. People don’t normally look at you with such hatred. Which can only mean one thing.

“Ah!” he gasps, back arching in pain. 

You slashed through his shirt, cutting his skin in the process. He wiggles, finally showing you his strength. But you pin him down by his throat easily, ripping the shirt open with one hand. 

“I knew it." 

He snarls angrily, swallowing heavily because breathing is becoming terribly difficult. 

"You are one of them”, you say, studying the raven tattoo on his right pec, “The Ravens of the Black Forest." 

He growls and fights harder. You figured him out. 

"Will you stop fighting against me?” you hiss, finally putting real pressure on his throat.

His eyes widen, fingers clasping your wrist. 

“Tell me your name." 

"Never”, he chokes out. 

You squeeze harder, making his eyelids flutter. 

“You’d rather die than tell me your name? Your conviction is remarkable.”

His body twitches, his lips opening and closing in search of air. You laugh. 

“Remarkable really. Such devotion could be useful. Also…" 

You drag the knife over his cheek softly.

”…it would be a waste to kill such a pretty face.“ 

You release his throat. He coughs and wheezes. 

"There, there you’ll live. It will bruise but you will live”, you soothe him, patting his chest.

He calms down slowly, staring at you with widened eyes. 

“Why would you spare me?" 

"Because I am not the monster you think me to be." 

He tries to sit up. 

"Stay”, you order, pressing the blade right against his throat. 

He falls down on the mattress, licking over his lips nervously. 

“That’s better”, you smile, “now, I’ll give you one last chance to tell me your name before I call in my warriors and tell them to throw you into a cell to rot." 

"Call them”, he hisses. 

You lower your eyes in anger. 

“Valkeria! Auralia!” you call them, “your silence won’t save you stranger”, you tell him. 

“My Queen you called upon us”, Valkeria asks, grasping her sword. 

“A confused bird has found its way into my bedchamber. Take him back to his cage." 

"Yes my Queen." 

The stranger leaves with an impressive struggle. Your warriors have much to do. 

"You won’t get through with this! You hear me? They will come looking for me!” he screams. 

“Gag him too, he is oh so noisy and I am trying to sleep."

The bar is loud and the people around you are happy. The music is upbeat, the lights are bright and colourful and the smell of good times hangs in the air.

But not for you. You feel heartbroken. Truly and devastatingly heartbroken. It hurts so much that you have spent the last hour curled up on a chair and sobbing into your knees. Nobody notices your sobs, eventhough they were incredibly loud. Their lively chatter and happy singing however, blended out your desperate cries for help. You were a stranger after all, a weird stranger who is crying miserably in a place which was supposed to be a place for fun.

Now, you didn’t start off the night as a miserable stranger crying in a bar. There was a world once, where women were the ones in power and men were the ones following their every word. The lands, each prosperous and beautiful, were thriving under the rule of their Queens. The people were happy, they had food and conflicts were solved with words and witty knowledge. Peace was all-worldly and laughter was plenty.

Taehyung had reached his twentieth year on this world three months ago. His mother, the Queen the Snow Isles, held a grandiose fete for her favourite son. The plates were never empty and the iron mugs were spilling over with hearty ale. Taehyung loved that night. He danced with his brothers and laughed with his sisters, he hugged his friends and joked with his servants. It was a great night, even though it meant come tomorrow he would have to leave home for his new life.

Marriage.

Just as tradition demanded, come his second decade on this earth, he had to be married off to a powerful princess. Many of his fellow princes dreaded their twentieth birthday and while Taehyung most definitely was scared of what may lie ahead for him, he was also excited. He had always had a curious soul and he looked forward to seeing the world outside his dark castle walls and long, cold winters. So come the first ray of the new day, Taehyung found himself on one of the ships of his Queendom, sailing away from home and watching the islands of his childhood become smaller and smaller on the horizon until they disappeared behind dreary fog.

The journey to his new home was long. Twelve nights on sea and seventy-eight nights on land. Taehyung found himself missing his home more often than once. He had his best friend and his servant boy with him, Jimin, he managed to make the long journey not as lonely. But it was still a long and exhausting journey.

On the first night of the new month Taehyung found himself at his new home.

The Sand Queendom.

A country full of magic and powerful sorceresses, with hot and dry summers and the prosperous havens of the vast southern ocean. Taehyung had never seen such beautiful architecture before. It was completely different from the grey, blockish buildings of his home. The houses were painted in bright reds and pinks and oranges, reflecting the blinding sunlight and painting the street below in warm colours. Taehyung found himself gazing at the high buildings, wondering if he would ever get tired of the view. Perhaps not, after all it was quite the spectacle indeed.

“Windows! The houses have windows, Jimin”, he heard himself gasp to his best friend. Taehyung had only heard of the concept of windows before. He read about them in books and looked at them in drawings. He found the idea of watching the world from the comfort of ones own room always terribly exciting. Back home the houses didn’t have windows. The winters were too harsh and the winds too strong. Windows would have only let too much heat escape.

“Yes, I read it is because the nights are so mild here”, Jimin answered him.

“That’s marvelous. Do you think my bedroom will have windows too?”

“I am sure it will.”
