This is so important. I remember being on booktok (a truly cursed place) and seeing (a majority) white readers saying they don’t read books with POC main characters because they couldn’t relate.

And I really couldn’t believe it because what the hell do they think POC have been doing when media is only producing and releasing tv, movies, books by white people for white people.

Sometimes it’s not even about relating to it. It’s good to make yourself uncomfortable with unfamiliar media. It forces you to open your eyes and sparks your curiosity so you LEARN things OUTSIDE OF YOURSELF.

A well rounded person (imo) is made up of all the different interactions and cultures they’ve come across. The knowledge they’ve learned from others because they stepped out.

Shit I’m still thinking about that ask I got. I don’t want to ever posture myself as the authority on all things black whatsoever, so I never want to come off like that, but since I was a kid I’ve seen so many of my fave books and shows get discontinued/not picked up because a non poc audience didn’t think they could relate.

As fanfics are literally a direct reflection of media, I think it’s important to be cognizant that there is a bias happening for poc writers. You may not want to engage because you don’t think it’s meant for you out of concern for the author but there’s someone else who secretly WONT engage because they don’t view an experience outside of their own as worthy. Plus by reblogging our culturally specific work you may be leading one of your followers who CAN relate to a fic or author that would comfort them!!
