a/n: after weeks of writer’s block i return to you all with some generic “falling in love with u” hcs 😳 except this time we’re dissecting things to the exact nanosecond 😳 let’s just hope my writing hasn’t gotten too rusty LMAO

BAKUGOU KATSUKI — thursday at 11:31 p.m., while taking a much needed break from studying

✧ your fists weakly bump against his back in protest as he lifts you over his shoulder, forcing you away from your laptop after having your eyes glued to the screen for hours. katsuki is usually quite impressed with how much of a fighting spirit you have, it’s what draws him to you so frequently. but right now, he really wishes you’d shut your mouth and just relax.

✧ “but katsuki… i didn’t finish yet…!” “i don’t care.” “but i still need to—” “what you need is some damn rest! now quit squirming so much, will you?”

✧ he’s relieved when you finally go limp in his hold, allowing him to carry you the rest of the way towards your bathroom. he sets you down once he’s sure you won’t bolt away the moment he releases you. thrusting your towel and sleepwear into your arms, he instructs you to shower and get changed, that he’s not leaving until he’s sure you’ve gone to shower. you stick your tongue out, retorting with a sardonic “yes, mother,” but you proceed to do as you’re told, anyway.

✧ katsuki really doesn’t need to stay after that. he doesn’t need to straighten out all the wrinkles on your bedsheets. he doesn’t need to wander into your kitchen and start making the soup that he knows you love. he doesn’t need to wait at the foot of your bed until he hears the water shut off. he doesn’t need to help you get that last button on your top when your fingers refuse to cooperate with you. but he does it all without a second thought, for reasons he can’t yet understand.

✧ he still stays as you grab the warm bowl from your nightstand, watching in silence as you take the first sip. all the tension and stress in your shoulders visibly dissipates as you let out a satisfied hum, and a strange sensation bubbles in his chest when you turn to him with a smile and tell him how good it tastes. at first, he thinks it’s his pride, boosting his ego as you finish every last drop. but something is different this time, and he can’t quite place a finger on it.

✧ that is, not until he finally stands up to turn off the lights and leave you to get some sleep. not until he tries, at least. your warm hands clasp around his arm before he can step away, and you boldly ask him to stay for the night.

✧ “please? just until i fall asleep?” “what are you, five?” “yes i am, so sing me a lullaby while you’re at it~” “i’ll leave right now, don’t even try me.”

✧ his mouth is still arguing with you, but his body betrays him, sitting back down at the edge of your bed as you settle in with a triumphant grin. he huffs, glancing down at his fingers as he tries to get his heart to take it easy.

✧ “i don’t know how you do it all the time but… thanks for looking out for me, katsuki…”

✧ somehow, right at that second, he finally gets it. as he watches your eyelids slowly close, he finally understands why he goes out of his way for you, why praises hold so much more weight whenever they’re from you, why he feels so warm whenever you smile at him.

✧ he almost laughs at himself. how did he not figure it out any sooner?
