I Had A Realization Come To Me In A Way I Can Only Describe As A Divine Vision From God:

I had a realization come to me in a way I can only describe as “a divine vision from god”:

While the freshmen are very obviously main characters, so ofc they’re going to feel different from the BG characters, I didn’t realize just how much they’ve accidentally isolated themselves, both by circumstance and by their own actions. All the BG characters of their dorms are close enough to be friends and, occasionally, intermingle with other dorm residents, so why does it seem so strange when our group of freshmen do it?

Because they’ve been isolated from their fellow newbies by their own housewardens. By daring to stand out, they’ve been made examples of. Ace is collared daily and Deuce is, borderline, starved of acknowledgment. Jack. Epel is specifically sought out by Vil because his attitude, “doesn’t match his appearance” (even though he’s the most trans-coded character in the entire series). Ortho and Sebek are fishes in birdcages; extroverts living around/with introverts, with some, borderline, anti-social.

These dorm leader claim to want normalcy and friendship, but will actively crush and/or diminish any attempts of anyone that tries who isn’t in the same “power bracket” (?) as them.

(Sebek and Malleus are obviously an exception to this, but they’re both freaks and Malleus is allergic to communicating (he breaks out into hives at the mere thought of going to therapy (/j)) . So I would go as far as to say this dynamic is Malleus’s fault because he’s got his foot in his mouth and expects people to read his mind, even though Sebek’s autism is so blazingly obvious it might as well be written in flashing lights on a billboard in Times Square).

I Was Wondering Why Kalim And Jamil's Outfits Were So Similar And Kalim's Home Turning Into Jamil's,
I Was Wondering Why Kalim And Jamil's Outfits Were So Similar And Kalim's Home Turning Into Jamil's,

I was wondering why Kalim and Jamil's outfits were so similar and Kalim's home turning into Jamil's, and I know a part of it is saving on assets since chapter 7 is HUGE, but I think there's a lot of symbolism in there too.

In this fake school, this is their school uniform. For Kalim, the colors are white and blue, and dream Jamil wears that, conforming to Kalim's idealistic view of him. The same is true for the opposite, inverting the colors to be red and black to suit Jamil's vision.

Jamil taking Kalim's home and making it his own I think is both showing how Malleus has very shallow ideas of what happiness means to people and also Jamil's inability to perceive life outside of servitude and Kalim.

We know what his real dream is- to be free and travel the world. But in this dream, he takes over Kalim's life and steals what, deep down, he believes should belong to him since a lot of what Kalim gets (like good grades, talent, etc.) is due to Jamil's sacrifices and undermining himself.

He's instructed by the adults in his life to make sure Kalim is happy at the expense of his own happiness, so of course in this 'happy dream' taking what Kalim has equals happiness, except it's not him.

There is a world out there outside of the caste system he lives in and his determination to break out and have that for himself is huge. I love reading too into them asdfghasd

thinking & there is also definitely a reading of kalim as someone who assumes his life is going to be short and is trying to make the most of life as he has it. (which like,, given kalim's power leads to the kinds of extravagance we see from him) and like i definitely wouldn't call him suicidal bc he's quite cautious where it counts and he has plenty of stuff he wants to stay alive for (people in particular). but his type of willful hedonism very much rings of someone who is both intimate with his own mortality and deeply grateful to be on this side of it
