Sesshomaru & Rinâs Relationship
There are many interpretations for Sesshomaru and Rinâs relationship, but in my opinion their relationship was always meant to be viewed as familial/platonic.
The reason I am addressing this is because a translation by @lilyginnyblackv2 recently caught my eye. It was a question regarding Sesshomaru buying Rinâs kimonos. This is the answer to the question from Rumiko herself.
âTakahashi: After receiving this question, I gave it some thought. And I thought it might be that Sesshomaru would order Janken to purchase kimono again and again and again until one was brought to him that suited her. And I also thought that he probably didnât convey a clear idea of it to begin with.â
My takeaway from Rumikoâs answer is that Sesshomaru is very purposeful in the kimono designs he eventually chooses for Rin. If Jaken doesnât come back with one he likes, Sesshomaru will send Jaken back until he finds one he deems suitable for Rin. So this made me want to take a closer look at the symbolism of the kimonos Sesshomaru chooses for Rin.
After Rin is left in Kaedeâs village, we know Sesshomaru continues to visit and provide her with kimonos as she grows. We have two examples:
The purple kimono with the yellow butterflies has been analyzed in this post.
However, I have yet to see any analysis for her pink kimono. What caught my eyes are the balls. @jojo-ingâ brought up the temari balls in this post.
What are temari balls? What do they symbolize and why are they important?Â
According to these posts and websites, temari balls symbolizes âloyalty and friendship.â Temari balls are also typically given to children by their parents. This is interesting because Mohara has temari balls in her background ED that we attribute to Inukag and Kagome, and the purposefully chosen kimono from Sesshomaru to Rin features what looks like temari balls- childrenâs toys that symbolize loyalty and friendship and that are often given to children by their parents or a close family member.
So what does this mean in regards to Sesshomaru and Rin? I think that it means their relationship is familial and platonic, based on trust and unconditional love that is not romantic or sexual in nature, nor do I think it will turn that way once Rin comes âof age.â The temari ball references combined with the use of onago to describe Rin versus onna and all of the symbolism pointing to childhood and youth, including the recent merch which features her as a child despite confirming her teen form is in the tree, makes me believe that Sunrise wants us to see Rin as a child so that we donât see Sesshomaru and her relationship as romantic or sexual.
Concluding Thoughts: I think Sesshomaru and Rinâs relationship is supposed to be familial and platonic, without any romantic or sexual undertones developing even when Rin becomes an adult. I could also be wrong and misinterpreting many things about their relationship, but given that all their canon interactions in the manga and original anime are familial and platonic interactions between an 8 year old child and 19 year old adult, and that Sunrise has yet to try to change our perception of that relationship, I feel my interpretation is correct.
Also thank you to @darkwitchofslytherinâ for helping me think through some ideas used in this post!

SessKagu magazine page translation
@the-storm-windsâ provided an HQ scan of this page so I took some time to translate the texts! The text in the top left corner is just names of staff and info about the showâs airing so Iâll leave that out :) If anybody else speaks Japanese and would also like to take a look at this, please feel free to and also let me know about any possible mistakes in my translation!
Letâs go:
Lmao. I love how they think we gone be so hurt and heartbroken and so mad đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł lole at best we'll be disappointed. Our life not gone fall apart like yalls would if Rin isnt the mom đ€Łđ€Ł
Dont try to make us yall lmao
Kagura can't be the mother anyway because she's a full demon lmao cry about it some more. They even had Moroha/Setsuna/Towa say "your mom is a human too!" In the recent episode to make it even MORE OBVIOUS lmao. Yall gonna be soooo mad when Rin is the mom and we are livinggggg for it
I'm personally living for when I get to start exploring my new town and the nearby cities in earnest. Do you know I've lived here a whole year and covid has made it so I haven't been able to visit any of the places or do any of the things this place is famous for? At this rate, I won't know where to take my folks when they finally get to visit, because I won't have done a single thing for myself! I just dream of a few days, just maybe a week or so, to do some of the stuff I've really been dying to do over here, and that would be enough.
... but yeah, your thing is interesting too.
Newest thing on my mind is that many times in the manga Kaguras "Earrings" weren't earrings. But it was attached to her hair. She one of the few characters who have long side burns
Along with 2 new people i wont name đ€đ€đ€đ€đ€«đ€«
*gasp* *shocked* you mean she had died???? I had no idea. Oh dear what shall i do with this information *faints* i guess once dead your dead. No chance at Revival or anything. Did you know no one can be brought back in inuyasha " oh what a shame! My heart
Why are people still arguing Kagura could be Towa and Setsunaâs mother
1) She ded
2) Even if she was alive: Theyâre HALF-Demons. Kagura is a full-blooded demon.
I liked SessKagu watching Inuyasha, but like,
Facts and apparently so would everyone else.
Bringing back that Kagome would ABSOLUTELY be anti sessrin.
