I joke a lot about McGucket being a cheater during the portal era, and i do think it's true to an extent, but in my mind him and Ford never officially got together during that time.

like, i think they had mutually required feelings, but Ford was a bit too dense to realize what he was feeling, and Fiddleford wasn't willing to make the first move.

I think if either of them HAD made the first move, the other would have accepted, albeit with some trepidation given their situation. (Although post gremoblin Fiddleford might've tried to erase the memory of them getting together out of fear or something)

I do also think they were sharing beds and holding hands, but nothing they couldn't pretend was platonic. Basically, i view that time period as a lot of unresolved tension they didn't know how to deal with or address.

This quote from The Haunting of Hill House rly sums up my take on their relationship at the time:
