a grad student at NYU, Alía Warsco, has created a free and open-source library of Quechua and Andean-related materials (and other global indigenous resources), called Runakunaq Bibliotecanku (The People's Library). i highly suggest checking it out
I have this running bit whenever I'm in Grand Central Station with someone where I'm like "You know, they filmed Madagascar here. This is when they had to chase down Marty the Zebra while he was trying to go to the wild" in like a very serious reverent tone. It has never made anyone but me laugh but I still do it every time.
Anyway I decided to show my dad and my brother the place and I was about to launch into my hilarious Madagascar bit when my brother-- who has never been to New York before and has never heard me do this-- smoothly interrupted me to go "Oh hey the giraffe from Madagascar got his head stuck in that big clock." Family bonds truly are something
Sort of related but gosh for the longest time I just didn’t think fan works were Allowed. And making fanfiction/ocs and such felt so so thrilling like a world had been opened for me
omll does anyone remember when like, ur 12 and an artist online. but nobody rly sees ur stuff (n that also doesn't matter to u bc ur 12 and u just draw to draw yk). n maybe u have some online friends, all artists also, or maybe u have irls who are also artists. n all yall would do are art trades back and forth??? and cute little fanworks????
like ur 12 and ur bff comes over and yall unknowingly making fan aus and fanfiction w ur ocs together??? scrolling thru lil persona/oc maker sites w two huge baja blasts, excitedly talking about how cute the outfits are and making up stories about how ur characters are besties and discover new powers together n one joins the evil side and they fight but its ok bc eventually they become friends again???? and they marry ur fave characters and have huge weddings and ofc cheating scandals??? and u make each other fanart for ur birthdays???? im just. that's also love. oml thats so love.
not to be pretentious, but a lot of stuff you guys complain is being ruined by capitalism/the algorithm/whatever can be solved by consuming something else than the most basic mainstream stuff that's thrown in your lap. "songs nowadays are getting shorter to fit entire tiktoks and it's ruining music" have you tried listening to something else than Spotify's Top 100 my dude? "fanfiction-to-publishing pipeline is churning out mediocre books and it's ruining literature" have you tried reading something outside the NYT bestseller list my dude? This is not a post about how algorithm based industries give visibility to the lowest common denominator art at the expense of actually creative and meaningful art that struggles to make itself known, which is a valid discussion for another time, this is about people actively not giving this kind of art their visibility because they won't get out of their way to discover stuff outside the mainstream radar and prefer to be passively fed what to consume while bitching that is not up to their tastes.
