Amid the crazy festivities, let's take a moment to remember what today is all about.

The men of the 2nd Continental Congress outright defied their king by adopting and later signing the Declaration of Independence because they believed that subjects to a government ought to have rights and freedoms under that government.

They believed that when people are denied these, after countless petitions to the king, they should form their own country where the government will not only listen to its citizens, but get its power from the people.

The Founding Fathers committed treason for these ideas, and resigned themselves to the hangman’s noose should they not succeed. 

I think this, and the ensuing war, say a lot about the principles that this country was founded on and how much they meant to the people who helped create our nation.
